This is the perfect bat house. Exactly as described and very simple to install on a tree or a barn side. The problem is trying to get bats to find the house to roost. It would great if the instructions provided a method to "bait" the house, although I understand this is not how bat houses work; so perhaps that is a moot point. I have only had the house up for about a month with no bats yet; but I have seen bats nearby so perhaps more time is needed. The instructions suggest waiting up to a year.

Made like a piece of furniture. Nothing cheap or shoddy in the construction. I hope the bats enjoy their new home and all my Florida insects. Comes with location instructions and fasteners. Worth the price.

Our neighbor bought one of these ages ago and finally gave it up as a bad job last spring. For Halloween this year, we spray painted it black and orange and filled the bat logo in with rhinestones. We hung it up on the porch and bought some cheap plastic bats to hang around it. Super cute!

The family of bats that moved in last weekend thought so too!

Now my porch reeks of bat droppings and my children fear the night, but this thing ABSOLUTELY attracts and and shelters our nocturnal companions. Apparently the other, unsatisfied reviewers haven't considered catering to the discriminating aesthetic tastes of their batty neighbors. For bats at least, it's all about the upgrades.

Bit pricey for what it is but is a decent product and constructed of cedar. Received with a split board on top but that's the nature of cedar. Lots of bat action in the area but none have entered yet. Has only been up for a short while.

One way to encourage bats to move to your bat box is to take damp soil and fill the bottom of the box. After a few days, empty out the soil and hang the box. This works even better if you use real bat droppings from a nearby bat colony, if you can get them. This process gets rid of the scent of humans that could otherwise be preventing the bats from colonizing your bat house.

So, I will preface my review by saying one should research the proper way to install a bat house before putting it up. To be honest, mine has yet to be properly hung, but it is painted black (which is suggested for my state). Bat Conservation International has some good references online about where to place them. Don't lose patience; bats may not move in immediately. Don't fall for the many myths about bats, just KNOW: they can eat up to 1000 mosquitoes in 1 hour! That's a pretty sweet deal if you can find it in your heart to see how adorably cute these mammals are and let them live a peaceful life in your vicinity. They are basically flying puppies! Which by the way ANY mammal can transmit rabies and "Worldwide, more than 55,000 people are estimated to die of rabies each year (World Health Organization), primarily from contacts with rabid dogs." So remember you still say, "AWWW" when you see a dog roaming outside...you damn sure have the same ability to do so for mosquito-assasinating bats. I just hope all our bat species still exist in 10 years given the awful human introduction of a new aggressive, deadly fungus into their cave homes. The fungus (P.distructans) is to them what the black plague was for humans. :(

This is our second bat house. We are trying to get the bats who live in our shutters to move. Unfortunately, our bats come back to the shutters, ignoring the 2 bat houses, which we have put at the recommended heights and in the recommended places. Igor, Vladimir, and the rest of the gang have returned to the shutters for 3 years now despite our blocking the entrance with mesh. We don't have the heart to evict them.

Anyhow, the bat house is home to a gang of rowdy squirrels, who like to sit on the house and gnaw on the wood.

I guess we'll have to look for a neon "vacancy" sign for the bat house . If anyone has any ideas how to train our bats, please let us know.

This is a good quality house and nice looking. I think the space may be too large for our bats here in California, however, so I'm going to add a divider before hanging. I suggest researching what your bats like before deciding to purchase.
