great chopping tool,
This review is from: Woodman's Pal Classic Set (Misc.)
You will never find a tool that does as much as the "Woodsman's Pal". It functions as an axe, hatchet, machete, draw knife, spoke shave, camp knife, and hammer. You can fell trees, split kindling, or chop onions, it does it all!

I fir5st saw this machete/knife years ago at a friends in Iowa, they used it for clearing brush and as a camp axe. I was impressed. I now have my own and I am thrilled. I am also pleased that an item I first saw almost 40 years ago is stillbeing made with the same quality as it was then. This is an excellent tool for clearing brush, trimming small limbs, actually chopping small trees and a host of other uses, do not leave the city woithout it.

I am happy with the Woodsman Pal. It cuts through small sapling and branches easily and the tang runs through the handle completely unlike other brands. My one concern is with regard to the rivets that hold the wood handle in place. With extreme use on hard dead wood, I have loosened up the rivets. With a hammer I was able to tighten them again, but they have indeed become slightly loose again after additional extreme use on some very hard dead wood. For clearing thick wild raspberry vines and opening up trails and lanes, this tool is hard to beat however.

This is such a great item! Thick and sharp. You will not be disappointed with this purchase! The blade is so thick that you cant bend it! Very sharp blade. Better than a camp ax.

Great tool for pruning. Hefty weight, but easy to use. Well balanced, sharp. Used it to pull and cut weedy roots, as well as lop off suckers from trees and bushes. I emailed seller for honing stone and sharpening oil, but got no response, and that was many months ago.

If you hunt in any kind of dense cover, this thing is a must. Perfect for clearing shooting lanes, carving a path out to drag your deer a shorter distance, etc. Nice and heavy in the hand to give your chops some oomph. Great blade.

This thing can be used from machete work to camp axe work . It comes with a blade grind of about 35 degrees which is running toward a camp axe grind .The blade is stiff too and doen't flex while cutting . I used mine the first time on a 2 1/2 inch dead Red Elm limb which was rock hard . It took 5 chops to cut it but it would have taken as many with a camp axe . The nice part was no hand shock (love that part), very balanced heavier blade making easier work and it was as sharp when finished as when it started . That surprised me since that limb was HARD and I hit it hard. Most green limbs 1 1/2 and under you cut with one good swing . Hook works very well on vines, small green sprouts, and briars too . It simply doesn't work me to death like most small camp axes and machetes I've used since it has good, balanced weight and again holds an edge. It is easy to carry and if I had to have just one tool for cutting heavier camp axe type work with some leafy type cutting I would go with this . Made in the U.S.A. and better metal than most tools of this type . It may seem to be expensive but when I count the cost of cheaper Camp Axes, and machetes I've bought over the years and not been happy with it suddenly is pretty cheap .

First tool I grab for clearing brush,

I purchased the leather handle one about a year or so ago. In NW Florida most of the brush is thick vines. The first thing I did was sharpen it with a fine file and steel - they called it sharp but not near enough for me - it sharpens well and holds an edge. The hook end is my favorite and works great as a drawknife for cutting vines near the ground or sometimes catching the stalk near the ground and pulling the plant out by the roots. I use the main blade as an axe for slashing vines or limbs up to about an 1 1/2" - over that I would use the chain saw for a cleaner cut - also use the main blade for cutting vines attached to the bark of trees. I expect if you don't lose it, it should last for many years - a worthwhile investment.

It is difficult to purchase anything not made overseas, this defies that issue. The product is as patriotic as its use in World War II. The thickness and sharpness of the blade speaks well of the quality. Most macheties are thin with poor metals used and couldn't hold up to true usage. Woodsman's Pal may be considered a commercial product, but I believe it is what every machete should be. Keep your money here and get a peice of history and get it dirty if you must.
