This review is from: Woodpicker pickup
I recently purchased a mandolin that was not equipped with a pickup for amplification. After extensive research on Amazon for a suitable after-market pickup, I chose the Woodpicker based primarily on its basic functionality and low price. The adhesive on the Woodpicker makes it easy to mount and to reposition in search of that "sweet spot" which gives the best sound. Since the Woodpicker is a generic pickup designed for use with any string instrument, its pig tail cable with female phone jack is overly long for a smaller instrument such as a mandolin. And, as with a similar product marketed under another name, it shares the problem of being subject to damage should you inadvertently put undue strain on the amp cable to which the Woodpicker is attached. However, with a little ingenuity the potential for this problem can be minimized by, for example, the use of a cable tie to secure the Woodpicker's cable to the instrument's end piece which is what I have done. The audio derived from the Woodpicker and delivered to the amp is very good, free of hum, and using it to practice in close proximity to the amp has yet to produce feed back. While I would love to have been able to purchase an after-market pickup with volume and tone controls, the Scotch in me rebelled at paying more for the pickup than I played for the mandolin. In sum, I'm quite pleased with the Woodpicker. This product is as described, does what it is supposed to do well, and is reasonably priced.
