John Blum takes his own spin on the life and motives of Woodrow wilson. He begins from his childhood, arguing that Wilson adopted a deep passion for speech and oratory skills, influenced by his pastor father. His ambition in life from his earliest years was to influence people through speech. He desired to create deep political thoughts without necessarily entrenching himself in politics. He had high moral ambitions that often would not be compromised even with lack of any outside support.

Wilson's vision of international peace dominated his perseverance at the Treaty of Versailles, only bending to a few European demands. During WWI, Wilson struggled with the concept of submarine warfare, comparing it almost to our modern evil of terrorism. It had barely any law to control it and could only strike without discrimination. Blum believed Wilson's morality was too self-serving and ignorant of the realities of war. His vision only held fast due to his own pride. He may have been right, but he was too disliked to have many supporters. He was the distractor from his cause, no many how righteous.

I would say Blum is a little harsh towards Wilson, reading in to his intents an a manner that makes Wilson look very manipulative and exceedingly prideful. I'd have to read more on Wilson before I could discount Blum's analysis. This is a good read for those looking to study the moral arguments WWI's challenges to the U.S. At least it's a short read.
