Woodrow Wilson's Poltics Outlined,
By
This review is from: Woodrow Wilson; the politics of peace and war (Library of the 20th century) (Paperback)
The author, a British Political Scientist and astute observer of the American Political Scene, has put together a compilation of the speeches and writings of Thomas Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924), the man who became the 28th President of The United States. We see young "Tommy" Wilson in his starts of an orator "speaking in his father's deserted church at night." He adopted the name "Woodrow" some time during his years as a stdent in University. As a student, his first work "Congressional Government" published in 1885, was an indication of that Wilson was "already the shaper and reformer." Wilson was a graduate of Princeton University in 1879 and a rising professor at that place from 1895 to 1902 and as an intellectual and historian. Further chapters dealing with Wilson's Presidency of Princeton University, Governor of The State of New Jersey and finally in his two terms as President of the United States from 1912-1920 are presented with fore notes in each chapter showing how these ideas were developed and presented, covering numerous and various subjects. His triumphs and defeats are dealt with, ending perhaps in Wilson's stroke and collapse during his unsuccessful attempts while trying to sell the people of The United States on The League of Nations. A very good book for the student of history and political science, in particular in reference to the many speeches and writings which are reproduced within the book. The movie "Wilson" which was panned by critics and a box office failure at the time but has since been seen as something of a good presentation of the life of Wilson and might make interesting viewing in combination with the reading of the book. |
