As old as this book is, it is still necessary in Wilson historiography. The thesis, that Wilson's political thought was largely shaped by his Presbyterian heritage and that this can be seen at various points in his corpus, is not defended well and is unconvincing. However, Mulder offers an intimate account of Wilson's life from his childhood to 1910, the year Wilson wins the gubernatorial seat in Jersey. This books offers a sharp view of Wilson at noted stages of his life and gives a fair interpretation of key events and ideas of his. The last few chapters are excellent. Some questions Mulder raises are picked up especially by Niels Thorsen and Ronald Pestritto. Mulder's account is still invaluable to Wilson studies.
