4.0 out of 5 stars Nice design for light-duty appliations (no pun intended).
After 2 months service controlling a 75W floor-mounted fan, I'm satisfied with my purchase. For a low-power, light-duty application such as this, the timer is convenient, well designed and adequately robust.

I purchased this gadget to control a floor-mounted electric fan, and it serves that light-duty application just fine, so far. The design is quite...

1.0 out of 5 stars Off by about 10 minutes a day; noisy
The one I received (a couple of months ago) is slow by about 10 minutes a day. Right from the git-go, it had this problem. So every few days, I have to correct the time. It's not a huge inconvenience. The dial with the "Time Now" pointer has to be turned so that the pointer is lined up with the current time. It only takes a few seconds, but it would be nice if I...

It only takes a few seconds, but it would be nice if I didn't have to regularly do that. At $8 (today's price at Amazon), I don't think this is an especially good deal.

One other thing. It makes a lot of noise. So much so that I used a towel to muffle the sound until I was able to replace it with a better timer.

The design is quite convenient. It's really simple and easy to set the on/off duratior ns by raising/lowering a group of "flippers"; it's a much better design than the removable clips on the Intermatic products. (Intermatic on/off toggles are easily lost, and their products only provide 3 intervals. This equipment provides all 48 possible settings at all times, without a lot of fuss and bother, and without losing the setters.)

I also liked the manual bypass switch. Much more convenient than the rotary switch found on the competing intermatic products.

The 3-prong, "earthed", side mounted outlet was a key selection criteria; safety is vastly greater with grounded equipment.

For a heavy-duty application, such as a large motor (ie. Swimming pool pump) or heater (ie. Space heater), I'd likely spend a few bucks more for a heavy-duty Intermatic timer, such as their WH40 (Little Grey Box) that's been running my water heater for almost 25 years. (http://www.amazon.com/Intermatic-WH40-Electric-Water-Heater/dp/B00004W4XI)

For ten bucks, this is perfectly adequate, and well designed.

Doesn't keep time over a day. It may be worth it to pay more for a better one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very LOUD, January 28, 2011
This review is from: Woods 59366 Lamp and Appliance Timer with 3-Prong Outlet, Repeats Daily (Tools & Home Improvement)
It's pretty hard to set "current time" on this device, but once you've set it, it's very easy to use. It seems to keep time accurately. The big con is that I bought this to use in my bedroom: it worked great for the first two weeks then all of a sudden became insanely loud. It's hard to sleep when it sounds like a bomb is ticking away near my bed. Too bad, since otherwise it's great. The noise is a deal breaker.

"The timer turns, but the pins don't work; the timer just makes a clicking sound and nothing turns on or off when the dial passes through the switched pins. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the fact that I have it plugged to the wall through a three-to-two prong converter?

I've emailed the manufacturer, Coleman Cable with this message. I'll post more info as I receive it."

Above is the original review. I have since received a replacement from the seller (who will get an excellent rating) and it works just fine. So product is A-OK, I just received a defective one originally.

5.0 out of 5 stars works on a wall and on a surge protector, March 27, 2009
This review is from: Woods 59366 Lamp and Appliance Timer with 3-Prong Outlet, Repeats Daily (Tools & Home Improvement)
After plugging this into the wall, you rotate the knob to point to the current time of day, then it keeps time for itself as long as its plugged in.

To set the time it has pins(some other reviews say they resemble tiny piano keys) that are pulled out.

The pins stay in(down) but slide in(down) and out(up) depending on when you want your lamp to turn on or off. Then plug in the lamp, fan, whatever. I have it turn on a heater in my bathroom in the morning :) and a fan in my room around midnight. So far it does everything it should, I have no complaints. I will update if it stops working

After a few months of use the timer on this device stopped working :( Just bought the similar one by GE, should have paid a few extra bucks to begin with.

1.0 out of 5 stars Difficult to use and problematic - poor design idea, October 8, 2011
This review is from: Woods 59366 Lamp and Appliance Timer with 3-Prong Outlet, Repeats Daily (Tools & Home Improvement)
I use several timers around my home to turn accent lighting on in the evenings, and then other lights around holidays. The style that have the little plastic pegs you insert at desired hours have always worked fine for me, but on a recent trip to the hardware store to purchase more, I saw these and thought I'd give them a try thinking they'd be easier to set.

With this design you push the tiny buttons down to program; the problem with that is, they can be easily bumped if you're not careful around them and the lights will turn on or off at the wrong time. It's also difficult to coordinate the hour on several units, finicky and less precise.

Bottom-line: don't bother, save your money. I've had nothing but trouble with these, and went back to the peg design.

2.0 out of 5 stars Pay attention to the reviews! It's LOUD., July 5, 2011

Bought it mostly to run a small air freshener for a few hours a day instead of all day. Loud clicking every 10-45 minutes (randomly?) is really obnoxious.

Haven't paid too much attention to its accuracy.

3.0 out of 5 stars LOUD!, February 5, 2011

I bought one of these and used it for about 2-3 months when it suddenly got very loud, making a constant grinding sound, as I use it in my bedroom it became unusable. I found that I could sometimes get the noise to go away if I unplugged it and shook it, moved it, but I would rather not have to do that. Also, the tabs to set the hours are easy to use but also easy to misuse. The outlet I had it plugged into was occasionally bumped by other cords, etc and would push down the pins and mess up my settings. I am going back to the old fashioned timer that has the pushpins from Intermatic. Also the override on this device isn't ideal, when you use the override button the timer settings don't work, on the Intermatic, it will override the settings but take effect the next time cycle, I like that a lot better.
