5.0 out of 5 stars great folk band, for a short time only, July 14, 2008

I bought the LP in the early seventies and was lucky enough to see this band at a gig in London in 1972 or thereabouts. Gay and Terry Woods were great and they had a group of young musicians who provided a great drive to the music. I remember the rhythm section in particular was really fluid, and quite different to the more chunky Dave Mattacks type of rhythm typical of Fairport Convention. Some great stuff here!

5.0 out of 5 stars Between Sweeney and the Pogues, December 29, 2006

I don't know whether this came before or after Steeleye Span (my guess is after), but it carries on from the second (and less trad) Sweeney's Men offering (The Tracks Of Sweeney). Gay and Terry Woods show the full potential of the folk/rock genre, while doing it in their own way ... Gay's tremendous vocals, and the instrumental genius of Terry that did so much for the Pogues, but never came to the forefront as it should have. Purely trad offerings such as "As I Roved Out" - Terry on mandola and electric giutar, Gay backing vocals accompanied by bass and drums are joined by original offerings such as "Dreams" (also recorded by Sweeney's) which move away from their trad roots into really progressive music. Listen to their later offerings, both as a duo and with other groups and you'll hear something from this album in them.
