5.0 out of 5 stars I blame Cristina Scabbia July 18, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I hadn't heard of this band before 2-3 months ago. I was in a book store and noticed a magazine with the singer mentioned in the title of my review on its cover.
The cover blurb mentioned an interview with her and I picked up a copy.
The magazine comes with a sampler CD of various bands covered within.
The first track on this particular CD was Woods of Ypres "Traveling Alone".
If you haven't heard of the band or heard this particular track, BUY IT NOW.
Yeah, it's that awesome.
After I checked around I purchased their first album via Itunes as it is currently out of print in CD format.
Then I purchased this album Woods IV: The Green Album from amazon along with a a few other items and listened to it the next day on the way to work and on the way home.
The first album was a bit....not sure how to put it, experimental I guess, and by the 4th album the band had changed lineup and had really started to hit it's stride.
Haven't gotten the 2nd 3rd or 5th yet, but I'm willing to bet that the progression would be there.
After doing some checking to see when or if I could see the band live I found out that the lead singer had been tragically killed in a car accident late last year as they were gearing up to start a world tour.

Yeah, buy the music because it's awesome, but, at the same time it'll be a bit sad cause that's all there is to be had.
PS Not really ticked at Ms Scabbia, just couldn't think of anything clever

5.0 out of 5 stars A solid 4.5 Stars March 29, 2014
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Great Album from some talented artists. I am new to Woods of Ypres but I have really dug both this album and Woods 5: Grey Skies & Electric Light . The prior albums I haven't cared for so much with the exception of a few songs here and there. This album was my first purchase from the band and I could not believe that I had not even heard of them before. Deep , dark and depressing songs and excellent grooves. Unfortunately , the vocalist and creative force behind this band has passed away and there will be no more albums to look forward to, which is a bummer since I was really impressed with this outfit. If your on the fence and haven't heard any of their stuff , find a few songs on YouTube and listen there. This album is definitely worth the asking price. A solid 4.5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars The green album November 1, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Very awesome album. I cant really say what tracks I like from this album cause I think its just "THAT GOOD". After checking this album I had to check out other albums and just other work that this band did and Im loving the music I am finding. If u like Katatonia, doom metal with black metal in the mix then u will love this album. David Gold R.I.P

4.0 out of 5 stars to much praise for this album August 24, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
just because the vocalist david gold is dead doesn't mean we can't piss and point out the flaws of this album. what drove me and i'm sure others to woods, was the personal themes they use. problem is? the lyrics are downright goofy, head on over to metal-archives and have a look.

the vocals, the baritone singing is excellent, the melodic black, not so much. no emotion or force behind them, just another mid tone vocalist. the drummer is beyond poor, the riffs are everyday.

overall, i would pick this up only if youre a dg fan, if you get the chance pick up woods 2 & 3, this is where the band shines.
