Bought this to use with my Black and Decker 18v drill/etc battery charger. These chargers are "Dumb" and will fry your battery over time, so you need to turn off or put a timer on it so you don't overcharge. This little item fit the bill perfectly.

Edit 2-12:
Ok, there is some kind of error in this thing, noticed a long time ago but just now getting around to it. The 1st one worked great for 9 mos, then began having erratic timing. Got another one, same thing but right out of box. Avoid this item.

Does just what it promises - turns on the power for 1, 2, 4, or 8 hours, or endlessly at the push or two of the one button!

Exactly what I wanted, at a moderate price. It covers more space on the outlet than I'd like; if placed in the lower plug on a dual outlet, it blocks the top plug, not a fatal problem.

11-18-09 I bought a second, to run more electrical appliances for specific numbers of hours and no more.

4-2-10 The one I use daily for an hour finally blew some interior component, so I got another. A very handy device.

1-15-11 Still using daily to turn on a space heater for a hour to either pre-heat the cold bathroom for use or dry it out after showers. Invaluable.

3-15-11 The replacement blew out, but I had another as a spare to swap in. Maybe running a 1500 watt heater an hour or two a day shortens the life somewhat.

Really liked this timer. I bought it to make sure my 1500 watt heater was turned off in my shop. At least one review said it was great for heaters. I should have paid more attention when I got it out of the box. It's a 1000 watt unit. My fault I killed it but it would have been awesome if it could handle a 1500 watt oil heater.

I docked a star - not for the unit but for the specs on amazon. It should really say what it's capacity is.

I purchased two of these socket timers so that I could use them to recharge my electronic devices. So far they work great. They are as simple as can be - you hit the one solitary button on the front to cycle through the timing options. The device is either continuously on (1 press), on for one, two, four, or eight hours (with 2, 3, 4, or 5 presses respective). The socket cover on the front of the device even rotates so you can close the plug in case you have children or pets that like to play with sockets (something I didn't even realize when I purchased).

I have only one complaint which is why I gave 4/5 stars. It has a rather insignificant, yet obvious design flaw. When designing a timer whose purpose is to... well, time something, wouldn't it make sense to have those functions first? What I'm trying to say is, shouldn't the "hold" function (which leaves the socket continuously "on") be the very last option? They designed it so that this is the first thing that happens when you press the button. But, if you bought this thing because it is a "timer" you clearly are more interested in timing something (a lamp or battery charger) for one, two, four, or eight hours. So that means that every time you go to use it you have to hit that button an extra time. For 99.9% of the people out there, they are probably saying "so what?" I would tend to agree with them except I'm an engineer and I notice things like this. Certainly not a deal breaker.

Oh - one more thing. The company that sells these things charges double the S&H if you order two (and I imagine triple if you get 3 and so on). They are small devices (about the size of a cell phone) that even came in the same package. I'm left to wonder why I was charged double the S&H for something that is small and ships relatively easy in one simple package.

Works as described. At the moment, the best price for one of these items is at SIM Supply. The same thing is sold under different manufacturer names (e.g., Woods Import, Woods, Simple Touch). Here is the same product by a different manufacturer on amazon: Simple Touch C30001 Auto Shut-Off Safety Outlet, Multi Setting.

Here is some info on the back of the unit, in case it is helpful to you:
TM-037
E211835
125Vac, 60Hz, 15A
1000W tungsten
1/4 HP motor
UL listed, made in china

The top of the unit is warm to the touch after it has been plugged into the wall (even when nothing is plugged into it).

Mine powers an indoor water fountain (so I can turn the fountain "on" for an hour or two, and I don't have to worry about forgetting to turn it off). It's especially helpful if I want to fall asleep to the sounds of the fountain, but don't want the fountain to run all night long.

I bought this because I have a flat iron that doesn't automatically shut off. Being used to having one that does this, I have such a hard time remembering to turning it off and then trying to remember IF I even turned it off! So I would be so nervous all day long at work wondering if I left my flat iron on. Then I think about my dogs in the bedroom and burning the house down and UGH, I had to relieve myself of this anxiety.

It has 5 different settings with the push of a button: ON (which keeps it on indefinitely), 1, 2, 4, or 8 hrs. I now keep my flat iron switch on and just push my digital timer button to set the amount of time I want it to be on. And of course, if I want to turn it off early, I just press the button until the red light disappears. The plug-in in the timer swivels as well. This is the perfect solution to my problem!!! No more anxiety!!! :D
