I bought this book thinking it would have some great shop tips and jigs I could use. What I got was a book with ideas like hanging pieces of paper with the names of the tools you hang on your peg board so you know where everything goes or tracing around the tool with a felt tip pen on the peg board, or using a magnet to pick up loose nails. Want to carry your ladder over your shoulder? Paint a red mark where it balances so you know where to pick it up and sling it on your shoulder. Not much useful here for someone who has been working in a shop for more than a year or two.

This book has some really great tips that are practical and don't cost a lot of money. One that I liked was to stick furniture glides (ones made of felt) on your clamps so the wood won't get damaged. This is a LOT cheaper than buying replacement clamp covers. I've just started the book, but it is hard to put down. (Amazon purchase)

I borrowed this book (produced by Popular Woodworking), and a similar book produced by Fine Woodworking (Best Tips on Finishing, Sharpening, Gluing, Storage, and more) from the library at the same time. This one is the stronger of the two.

I consider myself a low-intermediate woodworker (sadly, I spend more time reading about WW than **doing**...), and I found a **lot** of tips that I found downright clever -- and ones that I hadn't yet seen in the "Tips" sections of woodworking magazines over the years.

The organization of the book is a little odd: Having a chapter on "Shop Planning" makes sense. But -- for example -- "Techniques" is one chapter and "Tools" (**all** tools!) is another. This meant that "Nailing" is under "Techniques", but tips on using a hammer would be under the "Hand tools" section of "Tools".

Similarly, within the "Tools" chapter, power tools (bandsaws, circular saws, radial arm saws, routers...) each got their own section -- but all hand tools (hammers! handplanes! screwdrivers!) were lumped together. So hand-tool woodworkers may get less out of it than power tool woodworkers. But, as a hand-tool woodworker, I still learned a lot.

Now that I've read it (and taken notes!), I'm not going to buy it immediately: too many other books to buy. But it'll be in my personal WW library one of these days. If you belong to a woodworking club, buy it and put it of the club's "library" shelf.

Totally worth reading. But read it straight through, without paying attention to the organization.

If you are new to woodworking, or maybe not so new, this is a nice book to have. Lot's of little things you would probably never think of. Well worth it.
