With this ancient Chinese curiosity, a fascinating phenomenon of light reflection occurs. I do not own this item yet but wanted to clarify its description. While most mirrors reflect your image, or the image of whatever is in front of them, this one reflects incoming sunlight so that, when properly positioned, it shines an image of Buddha on the wall. Woodstock's description follows:

We might have to wait until summer (when there is more sun) to really get this thing to work as expected and have more fun with it.

The effect appears to require very parallel light to make distinct the very small surface variations that are not detectable (or hardly detectable by eye). It worked with sunlight, but not with other lights in our foyer. (Because it was the dead of winter when we received the item, we experimented with some rather high power LED's. They didn't work, but when we did find a good sunlight beam, we did get a faint reflection.

We were amused and are still figuring out how it would be fabricated and how someone might have originally found the effect. (we've resisted the temptation to Google it). But more reflection experiments will have to wait until we get more sun in the house in a few months.
