Product Description

Amazon.com Review

The sounds of nature are sweet, but the music of chirping birds, chattering squirrels, and rustling leaves is even sweeter when accompanied by Woodstock's Tibetan-influenced, tenor computer-tuned wind chimes. These silver chimes play notes inspired by the work of famous Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu. "From Me Flows What You Call Time" is a musical score infused with the symbolism of Tibetan Buddhism. Company founder Garry Kvistad has developed an advanced method of tuning used on every Woodstock chime: each tube is analyzed digitally with a microphone under the tube measuring the frequency, and cutters are instructed to remove just the right amount of material to produce the most precise tuning possible. The result is a purer, more harmonious sound. All Woodstock wind chimes are made in the USA from nonendangered hardwoods treated to endure season after season of outdoor use. Woodstock prides itself on being a socially responsible company, explaining that "through the sale of our chimes we proudly support the arts, as well as many environmental and humanitarian causes." Add a hint of Tibetan mystery to your yard or garden while contributing to the harmony of the earth. --Ariel Meadow Stallings

Product Description

The Tibetan Prayer Chime is tuned to the musical theme commissioned to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Carnegie Hall. At Carnegie Hall, composer Toru Takemitsu's work, From Me Flows What You Call Time, featured 2 large custom sets of Woodstock Chimes suspended above the audience and activated by colored ribbons that extend to the performers on stage. These ribbons represent the colors of Tibetan prayer flags. A portion of the proceeds of the sale of this chime will be donated to Tibet House US to support their goal of preserving Tibetan culture.

Woodstock Chimes are the original, musically-tuned, high-quality windchimes known worldwide for their superior sound. When listening to a Woodstock Chime, you hear a fine musical instrument played by the wind, perfectly hand-tuned using the ancient system of “just intonation” based on natural harmonics. This means the frequencies at which the different tubes vibrate are related to one another by simple whole-number ratios. Tones that are related in this way produce the most beautiful musical intervals. The sonic effect is exceptionally pure and soothing.

More than 30 years ago, the first Woodstock Chime was created by founder and owner Garry Kvistad from an aluminum lawn chair he found in a landfill. As a professional musician and instrument designer, he was fascinated by the Scales of Olympos, a 7th century pentatonic scale that can’t be played on a modern piano. Garry had the idea to cut and tune the lawn chair tubes to the exact frequency of the ancient scale. The resulting Chimes of Olympos was the first Woodstock Chime and is still one of our bestselling windchimes. Garry and his wife Diane founded Woodstock Percussion, Inc. in 1979 and it remains a family-owned business in New York’s Hudson Valley.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great sound... but......, July 20, 2001

it rarely chimes... that is, unless there is a gale force wind. The sound is beautiful, and has wonderful rich tones that resonates long after the chime has been struck. My only complaint is the frequency of the "chiming". Light, even moderate winds barely get the clapper into motion, and unless its a very windy day, or before a storm (which you dont want to be outside anyhow) it rarely makes it voice heard.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Woodstock Chimes Tibetan Prayer Windchime (Lawn & Patio)
I bought this chime for my sister's new house. She loves it, and to me it makes a more calming sound than most wind chimes do. I'm not trying to make a value judgment here, just tell you what you're getting.

The average wind chime has much smaller diameter and shorter tubes, with a high-pitched tone. Because most chimes are also lighter, the chimes more easily touch each other, and so chime more often than this one does.

The Tibetan chimes have a deeper tone, which is very soft as well. I couldn't hear them as well as most chimes through the wall of the house. It is clanged by a wooden clapper about halfway up the length of the chimes, driven by a small wood triangle weight below the chimes, attached to the same string. I have noticed that because of its design, it does not chime nearly as much as it might have with a better weight, especially in light winds. The triangle weight seems to spin around as much as it pulls the clanger into the chimes. All the materials are very good, and I expect it will last for years.

I've got to say, the florid verbiage in Amazon's and the manufacturer's reviews seem a bit much. Perhaps some people think of Japan's great wind-chime master when they hear a chime, but I just think they sound relaxing, which is reason enough to have one. I understand that dramatizing the ad copy is good marketing, but please.

4.0 out of 5 stars WoodStock Tibetian Prayer Wind Chimes..., June 10, 2001
By
This review is from: Woodstock Chimes Tibetan Prayer Windchime (Lawn & Patio)
I bought this chime set and have enjoyed it greatly! As a result of my enjoyment, I've also given several WoodStock chime sets to friends and family to share the joy. The reason I rate 4/5 instead of 5/5 is because this particular chime set requires a heavier breeze than the others to get it to chime but I have no regrets and recommend it highly.
