What a beautiful book! I am amazed at the aesthetics alone. The pictures and text are presented on a tastefully decorative background, and yet it does not distract from the actual content. In addition, each chapter has it's own artistic border. This not only adds to the beauty, it's easier to find pics and stories you might want to share when pressed for time. A...

3.0 out of 5 stars just so so
The layout of this book was very well done. However the scope of the photos was very limited, and the writing was rambling and disconnected. I enjoyed the Woodstock Storybook much more.

A great coffee table book!

Woodstock Peace, Music & Memories is very different from most other books on the subject simply because it is a collection of stories from several people who were there, and clearly remember it. It is not the same old "official" stories and legends that have been retold countless times over the past 40 years. The personal accounts are engaging and offer a great insight into the experiences of many festival goers.

There are far more pictures than text. Hundreds of photos, and many, if not most, have never been seen before. Photo quality is amazing, including shots of newspaper articles of the time. The articles are one of my favorite parts...it is fascinating to read what was actually being reported at the time.

This is one of those books that you can flip through over and over. The quality of the book is unbelievable for such a great price and it's the best book I've seen about anything Woodstock.

Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars The True Essence of the Woodstock Experience, June 13, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Woodstock - Peace, Music & Memories (Paperback)
When I finished devouring Woodstock: Peace, Music and Memories, I gave it to my 23 year old to have a look at it.

Woodstock never interested him so when he half-heartedly grabbed the book out of my hands, I thought that I would be getting it back in less than 5 minutes.

However, after several hours he wanted to sit down and hear all about Woodstock (yes, I was lucky enough to have been there). He had always thought that I had put "my spin" on the experience but once he read over and over again that other people had also been affected (in a good way) that maybe there was much more to Woodstock then he had believed.

Reading the stories and the quotes, he was able to finally see the picture that I had been describing over the years.

Although we have Woodstock the movie on tape and have other books that have been released over the last 40 years, it wasn't until he read through Woodstock: Peace, Music & Memories that he finally "got it".

Thank you for recreating and preserving the memories and enlightening new generations.

Peace

5.0 out of 5 stars An Original Woodstocker Speaks Out...!, June 13, 2009

This review is from: Woodstock - Peace, Music & Memories (Paperback)
"It was with great expectation and excitement the day I unwrapped my edition of "Woodstock, Peace, Memories & Music" written by Brad Littleproud and Joanne Hague. I had pre-ordered it some months prior and finally it had arrived. My first impression was to marvel at how large, substantial, and beautifully illustrated the book appeared. I knew immedately I was holding something very special in my hands. The quality and photo layout is superb. The balance between photo and dialogue is exceptional. It comprised 255 pages of historical significance beautifully crafted in a volume that begged me to roll up with it and to relive wonderful memories which immediately jumped off the pages. As an author and someone who actually attended the event depicted in this book, I cannot but give it my highest endorsement. It is descriptive, educational, well written and masterfully compiled. This book is destined to become the classic reference sourcebook. An educational, pleasureable retelling of the event which defined my generation and impacted the consciousness of the entire world."

Finally! A great collection of audience snapshots, video still and recollections the invoke the magic of the event. This is the real thing. Warts and all. The spirit of joy still comes through 40 years later thanks to these pages. If you've ever been to the site you know the vibe.
Woodstock was a Kumla Mela - a great gathering of holy seekers - that occured just once on American soil. And that soil holds its memory. Go there, experience the peace that's still there. and read this book more than once. Go ride the music!

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Really Helps The Reader *EXPERIENCE* Woodstock!, June 29, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Woodstock - Peace, Music & Memories (Paperback)
I love the 40th Anniversary WOODSTOCK-PEACE, MUSIC & MEMORIES book by Brad Littleproud and Joanne Hague.

The over sized book measures 10-inches by 10-inches and is stuffed with black and white, and color professional and amateur photographs that really give the reader a secondhand experience of what it was like being at the 1969 music and peace festival.

There are newspaper clippings included that are big enough to read so you really get an all-sides presentation of the event. I really like that the book contains stories from the attendees about how they ended up going and what happened once they got there. Some even have pictures of themselves that they either took at the concert or where captured by pro photographers who were covering Woodstock. It really gives you a better understanding of what was going on at the festival and really gives you insight to appreciate the movie Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music Director's Cut (40th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition with Amazon Exclusive Bonus Disc) and the scope of the event.

This book focuses on the real stars and story of Woodstock--the concert goers--and does include great pics and memories from the performers as well. Also included:

*Follow up on some of the attendees and performers

*Information on what happened to the site after Woodstock

*Comparison photos of then and now

*Collectible price guide and information of other books and magazines on WS

Like the authors, I was too young to go to Woodstock--I wasn't even born yet--but through their book WOODSTOCK - PEACE, MUSIC & MEMORIES and the inclusion of the photos and recollection of those who did attend the "Aquarian Festival," I did get a vicarious thrill of what Woodstock must have been like for those kids way back when.

If you'd like the same thrill or if you attended and just want to relive those memories, I highly recommend buying this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A one-of-a-kind book about the famed '69 music festival, June 24, 2009
This review is from: Woodstock - Peace, Music & Memories (Paperback)
I've read every book on the famed '69 festival (and I was there myself), but this work truly reveals the spirit of the young people who were there, a very unique and moving tome. The richly detailed personal accounts and treasure trove of photos make this book hugely rewarding. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Going Up to Country...Again, June 21, 2009
This review is from: Woodstock - Peace, Music & Memories (Paperback)
Kudos to Brad Littleproud and Joanne Hague for capturing the sights and sounds of this historic event that came to define a generation and a special era.

We at nearby Camp Ma-Ho-Ge (Happy Avenue and Laymon Road) had the good fortune to hear the music coming over the mountain. The older campers and many counselors snuck away to Yasgur's Farm, then snuck back into camp.

This book does a great job of detailing how Bethel "took Woodstock" and made it its own, when the Town of Wallkill declined to host it. And the interviews with the performers are moving, particularly how Richie Havens created the song "Freedom" on the spot. The book has numerous interviews with regular people..such as how they traveled from all corners of the U.S. to get to Yasgur's Farm and what they did when they got there. As a resident of Bethel now, I was really impressed with the chapter, "Then and Now" showing photographs of key locations around the festival site from 1969 and from late 2008.

It may be that one day more than a half million strong will come together in one place to hear music. But there will never be another Woodstock.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book on the Woodstock Experience, June 20, 2009

This review is from: Woodstock - Peace, Music & Memories (Paperback)
CONGRATULATIONS to these authors for such a thorough job in presenting the Woodstock Festival and to the publisher for using such high quality "glossy" type paper. This is a must for any Woodstock fan's library and is clearly the best description of the Festival itself, while the best book on how Woodstock came to be is "Young Men with Unlimited Capital" by two of the original 4 Woodstock Ventures, Inc. partners...the ones with the money, maturity and professionalism to salvage the mess it turned into. So if you want to see the actual Festival itself, THIS is the book for you. The pictures are numerous and wonderful, and take on a life of their own when the actual concert attendees tell their stories. Just a wonderful piece of history told in such a wonderful way. Lastly, the frosting on the cake are the appendices in the back which will take the newcomer, as well as the old Woodstock fan, through all the many places and items to see and purchase concerning this greatest Festival in the history of the planet Earth. I see I am offered a tag with this review, so I have decided to place one for my favorite Woodstock memorabilia item, a Peace Pendant actually made from the very chain link fence that was used at Woodstock, id est, www.peacefence.com. I have given them as gifts to many friends as they are the ultimate relic in my view, and the people who make them are truly "one of us", of the Woodstock Nation. Peace, Love (monogamous) and Rock N Roll. Roger P. Orcutt, Ph.D.

Got the book yesterday and spent 2 hours in glorious flashback! Great cover, colors, photos, musicians, hippies, text, memories, and artifacts - reminded me of the actual weekend, and of my trip back in 2004. I'll read it word-for-word this summer. Great art and documentary!
