Make sure you order the correct adapter,
By
This review is from: Woodstock W1044 4-to-2-1/2-Inch Reducer (Tools & Home Improvement)
This adapts a 4" hose to a 2.5" hose. It does not allow you to connect a 4" hose to a common 2.5" machine outlet. Woodcraft and Rockler have a 4" to 2.25" adapter which allows a direct connection.

A NO PROBLEM FITTING,
By BRADLEY KELLER (BRIGHTWOOD OREGON) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Woodstock W1044 4-to-2-1/2-Inch Reducer (Tools & Home Improvement)
If your worried about this thing fitting STOP !! This fitting fits inside the standard 4" collection hose no problem. As for the reduction end it's also true and mated with my shop vac hose just fine. Here's a little helpful hint.If your having problems with fittings or your dust collection hose has a weird tweek in it and wont fit up under your machine like you want.Use a heat gun or a hair drier to slowely heat up the hose and then position it however you need to. Now get out there and collect some dust.

I Shoulda' Bought One Sooner!,

I had been using my screaming, ear-killing ShopVac for dust collection on my router table until I bought this adapter. Now I use my quiet, absolutely wonderful JET 1100 cfm dust collector (see that review), connected to the hose from my ShopVac through this adapter. I can actually hear my router now! This will adapt your 2 1/2" vacuum hose to your 4" dust collection hose. I can even vacuum the floor without going deaf now! Such a cheap improvement; your ears will thank you!

Won't mount directly to tablesaw port but found solution,
By
This review is from: Woodstock W1044 4-to-2-1/2-Inch Reducer (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought this hoping I could slide it onto the outside of my tablesaw dust port and attach my shop vac hose to it. Both the outside of this adapter and the outside of the tablesaw port are 4". In other words it is a male to male connection. I could not find a female version.
The solution I found was to get a 45 degree pvc plumbing joint for about $3. I could not find any other plumbing part that fit snugly, all the others were loose. The elbow holds the reducer snugly as well as the port from the tablesaw. I epoxied the adapter to the pvc elbow. You can then tape or glue the elbow to your tablesaw port as you desire for your purposes. This method worked a lot better than spending another $25 on a 4" hose that I did not need. Here is a link to the part at home depot: [...]

This device is great to use if you are trying to collect dust from a table saw or planer. However, you need the Woodstock W1038 4-Inch Quick Connect and Disconnect so that it will slip over the 4" port. I simply duct taped this W1038 to the W1044 to join the two ends (They have the same ID and OD). I wish I had a F-F adapter sleeve so the ID of both the dust port and this adapter would simply slide in.
However, the duct tape works great to keep these two connected, and I can simply slide the W1038 on the tool that I am about to use.

Combined with a "plumbing-dept" rubber pipe connector, these work well for all my shop tools. The plumber connectors are the key as they are available for every standard size port you might need. They come as 2:2 or 2.5:2 or 2:3.0 etc. They use a clamp on each end so the ports are tight and right. Order several at once or you pay more for freight than the tool !!

Good product, poor description,

I'm taking one star off because the description for this product is fairly poor and does not make clear exactly what kind of connection it is meant to create. The product itself is high-quality and works perfectly once you figure out how to use it.I purchased this reducer to connect my 2.5" shop-vac hose to my Ridgid table saw, which has (what I believe to be) a standard 4" dust collection port. Initially, I expected that the 4" side would fit inside or around my saw's DC port, and the 2.5" side would fit inside or around my shop-vac hose. However, the 4" side was the same diameter as my DC port (i.e. they were both "male" pieces requiring a "female" connector to make a male-to-male bridge). Accordingly, I realized that this reducer is meant to fit inside a standard 4" DC hose, not a DC port on a tool. So, I cut a few feet of DC hose, connected that to my table saw's DC port, and then fit this reducer into the hose. I then connected my shop-vac hose to the 2.5" side of the reducer with no problems. Hopefully this clarifies what I had some difficulty discerning from the other reviews: this product appears to be designed to connect a 4" hose to a 2.5" hose; not to connect a 2.5" hose directly to a 4" DC port. Of course, it is possible that other tools do have a DC port that this will fit inside or around, but if you order this part and are unable to make a direct shop-vac-to-tool connection, try using a short length of 4" hose as a bridge.

But, dumb me, I was sure this was exactly what I needed. It turns out that I have the same problem as others - it won't fit on my dust collector hood 4" opening. Guess I'll look around for something I can use to couple them but I shouldn't have to do that.

Doesn't fit Jet JJP-8BT Jointer Planer,

Amazon has this listed with the page for the Jet JJP-8BT as "People often buy this". Don't spend the extra $5.00. One it doesn't fit onto the dust collector that is part of the Jet and second the Jet comes with a 4' to 2-1/2" adapter already that does fit.

The 4 inch end won't fit any of my tools. It is the same size as the tool dust collector. I am going to buy a piece of 4" sewer pipe to see if it will work to connect this item to my Dewalt Planer, Jet bandsaw, and delta joiner.
