Editorial Reviews

Informative and superbly detailed, this viewable demonstration offers step-by-step tutorials for creating seemingly impossible toys, puzzles, and brainteasers. Emphasizing the importance of wood selection and workshop health and safety, the guide utilizes basic woodworking skills to create intricate projects ranging from an old-fashioned whistling top to interlocking spheres or a spiked star in a cube. Spotlighting successful secrets of turning—marking with precise mathematical formulae, constructing purpose-built jigs and chucks, and creating special turning tools—this jargon-free DVD can be used alone or in conjunction with the companion guidebook of the same name.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very informative but... January 17, 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
The "secrets" are very interesting as I've always wondered how the fancy turning stuff was done. For that, I'm glad I bought it. However, only three projects are covered. In addition, there's only about 30 minutes of real instruction packed into 2 hours. Lots of tedious, non-necessary, redundant, repeated, repeated, repeated, dragged-out video. It would have been great had they covered a few more projects - even if it was only brief overviews. The 3 stars are for only hitting three pieces (and showing 10 on the cover art) and for filling three quarters of the video with boring mundane tasks (like pealing off 12 pieces of masking tape.) Had it cost 1/3 what it did, it would have been worth 4 stars. Had it covered (even briefly) all the art on the cover it would have been a solid five stars. Happy turning!

Springett is an expert turner and gives clear instructions that will not make you and expert turner, but will give the
ability to practice and become very proficient.
