More than just projects,

This review is from: Woodworking Simplified: Foolproof Carpentry projects for Beginners (The Weekend Project Book Series) (Paperback)
An excellent book for beginners. I especially liked the section on tools and the recommendations for the small set of essentials needed for most projects: hammer, cross-cut saw, tape measure and combination square. There is extensive information on how to work with wood, nails and screws. The projects are not difficult, and some include decorative touches like carving. The only thing missing is information about paints and finishes.

My wife got me this book as a present, and to say the least, I am no handy man. I am proud to say I now am! This book was super clear, and the designs had interesting projects that we could really use. I really recommend this book to anyone, with or without building experience.

I'm a novice woodworker and checked out a dozen books from the library on the subject. This is the one I'm going to purchase - by far the best of the lot.

This is an excellent book. It's an easy read but it explains all sorts of things such as how boards are cut from lumber, basic techniques, essential tools and so on. Unlike a lot of books the projects are immediately useful. I went through this book one summer building projects in order of their appearance in the book, after acquiring the very minimal essential tools the authors recommend. Each project is useful and the early projects build upon each other (pardon the pun) so that you'll quickly have a traditional box for your tools, a "nail box" (that I actually use for holding tools) and a neat saw guide to make perfect right-angle and 45-degree miter cuts with your hand saw. I used the saw guide for the rest of the projects that I built and liked it so much I made a couple different sizes for other projects. I highly recommend this book if you're interested in learning to work with wood even with a small budget and limited space. As a bonus you'll be learning by building things like a letter file, an underbed storage box, and a toy chest, that most likely you or someone you know will really be able to use. There are even plans for a loft bed if you know someone who's starting college and planning to live in a dorm. Although if you're just starting out I'd build some of the smaller projects first. By the way everything you see in the cover illustration is a project you can build from plans and instructions given in this book, including the workbench that the other projects are sitting on.

This book has been just incredible. Finding a good woodworking book for beginners was proving to be an impossible task... thankfully due to other Amazon reviews, I decided to purchase this book and see how it would go.The book reads very down-to-earth and informal. However, they still stress the importance of safety, especially with power tools. Overall, I'm extremely pleased with the book and I will continually refer back to it for more projects. 5 stars. |
