This two-CD set is a lovely sampler of more than two dozen Thirties - Forties popular music, and as such is really a great buy despite a few minor demerits:

-- You'll find no classical music here. Nor blues, nor folk music. These twenty-six tracks are the kind that were popular on the radio from the mid-Thirties to the mid-Forties; in fact, ten of them (I may have undercounted a little) came from one Woody Allen movie, RADIO DAYS (1987), which runs from 1938 to New Year's Day, 1944. But while there's a good deal of overlap, this album and the movie RADIO DAYS hold quite a few tunes of their own.

-- For the most part, (one exception being Artie Shaw's studio masterpiece "Begin the Beguine"), these are radio versions of popular tunes, probably recorded on acetate master discs during live performances over network radio. Several times we hear the audience applauding, laughing or murmuring. Additionally, the "source limitations" of the acetate masters and no stereo signal are inherent: mono only, very limited frequency range, lots of white noise-type hiss and some rumble. If you insist on the highest technology of standards or arrangements that exactly match later postwar recordings or movie music, this album is not for you.

-- This is a plus and a minus: at least ten of the songs are included in Woody Allen's 1987 film RADIO DAYS, which is set in almost this exact period -- about 1938 to New Year's Day 1944 -- and features almost wall-to-wall music as heard on the radio. SONGS THAT MADE HIS MOVIES GREAT is not an official soundtrack, but with over a third of this compilation's songs featured in the movie, it's understandable to compare.

I love the music in Woody Allen's films! This is a great collection of the type of Jazz Woody is famous for using in soundtrack. I love listening to this while I work, write cook or eat!

Every so often I like to escape - my waspy culture, my suburban childhood and my ballroom dancing classes. Music allows one to speak a foreign language for a while, wear virtual low slung pants and rap or remember when innocent romance swept my parents away! Escape with big band, listen to simple lyrics and travel in time ... the escape is a gentle time machine!

I was hoping for this set to have the songs from Midnight In Paris, which they didn't. Still there were the songs from Radio Days including a couple of obscure takes/arrangements on some big band numbers which I hadn't heard before and thought them quite nice and refreshing.

How wonderful to hear all of these classics again! This cd is on my player more than any other. I can sing along with all of them. Whether or not you're a Woody Allen movie fan, it's hard to argue with his selections of background music. They're all great!

The wonderful array of classics here is timeless. The album itself is a fly-by-night, thrown together item. There are no liner notes whatever, nothing to assign the songs to particular Woody Allen movies. When I went to enter these classics into my iTunes, the second disc came up only as Track1, Track 2 etc. No names. I would never again buy an album from the people who produced this one.

If you love popping in a cd that transcends time and takes you on a whimsical journey through an era of art - class and groove. Then look no more. Pop this cd in and feel the good vibes. Bonus if you recognize what films the songs are from
