Editorial Reviews

Woody Guthrie was born on July 14th, 1912 in Okemah, Oklahoma. Over the decades, his songs have run around the world like a fast train on a well oiled track. They've become the folk song standards of the nation, known and performed in many languages throughout the world.

Woody Guthrie at 100! Live at the Kennedy Center, is the CD/ DVD centennial celebration of the birth of America's greatest folk singer, Woody Guthrie. John Mellencamp, Jackson Browne, Tom Morello, Donovan, Ani DiFranco, Rosanne Cash, Old Crow Medicine Show and others perform many of Guthrie's classics along with recently recorded lyrics from the Woody Guthrie Archives. This historic DVD captures is the concert recorded live at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC on October 14th, 2012. The DVD also includes additional performances by Judy Collins, Lucinda Williams, Jimmy LaFave, Rosanne Cash, Old Crow Medicine Show and Ramblin' Jack Elliott that were not shown in the PBS Broadcast. The accompanying 19 song CD is the perfect soundtrack to this unique event.

"WOODY GUTHRIE AT 100! LIVE AT THE KENNEDY CENTER"
(Sony Legacy, 2013)

This concert CD/DVD set coincides with a PBS special in honor of folk icon Woody Guthrie, on the occasion of what would be his 100th birthday... The DVD includes over a half-dozen performances not included in the TV special, with Americana newcomers Old Crow Medicine Show joining a slew of esteemed elders, including folks like Jackson Browne, Ry Cooder, Judy Collins and Donovan, bluegrassers Tim O'Brien and Tony Trischka backed by the Del McCoury band and roots-rocker John Mellencamp singing the good old "Do Re Mi." Highlights include Rosanne Cash with two soulful ballads, "I Ain't Got No Home" and "Pretty Boy Floyd" and a touching performance from Guthrie's longtime compatriot, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, an old-timer who's still hanging on and singing the great old songs as best he can. Elliot's fragile, impassioned rendition of the labor anthem, "1913 Massacre" forms a palpable link back to Guthrie's heyday and the historical context these early folk troubadours came from. A fitting tribute to one of the great American musical trailblazers. (DJ Joe Sixpack, Slipcue Guide To Country Music)

This celebration of Woody Guthrie's one hundredth birthday is more like a family gathering than an all-star tribute. That's because every one of these performers is an artistic descendent of Gurthrie's music. It's impossible to overstate Woody Guthrie's impact on popular music, as his themes, songs, style and attitudes have transcended several generations of performers and fans; Guthrie remains a North Star by which folk-derived music is navigated. The song list includes many of Guthrie's best-known and best-loved songs, along with archival lyrics posthumously set to music by Joel Rafael, Lucinda Williams, Jackson Browne and Tom Morello.

Staging this homage as a concert, rather than a collection of studio recordings pulled together over weeks and months, honors one of the basic tenets of Guthrie's work: music as a shared, visceral experience. Guthrie's songs were written for live performance, and every one of the night's performers was fueled by both the material, the stages they've traversed throughout their careers, and each other. The breadth of Guthrie's mastery is evident in material that ranges from endearing children's songs to strident social commentary and searching introspection. The universality of his work is equally evident in the range of musical styles in which his songs are comfortably expressed, and the continuing currency of his topics.

The CD artfully edits the performances into a briskly-paced 77-minute program shorn of between-song banter; the DVD augments the program with a reading from Jeff Daniels and a short speech from Guthrie's daughter, Nora. Both of the spoken pieces, and six of the musical selections are additions to the one-hour PBS broadcast cut.

Also attended this concert. What a great night! I think the album producers did a good job fixing some of the technical and sound level issues that were going on onstage during the changeovers between many of the performs. There is some really inspired stuff on this album!
However, Ry Cooder's "Vigilante Man" was epic! Is a new verse about Treyvon Martin too radical, favoring of the underdog and controversial for a Woody Guthrie tribute?! I do understand the rationale for splicing out Tom Morrello's little "pep talk" during "This Land Is Your Land".

Terrific job in commemorating Woody. Quite a few artisits new to me that I will seek to hear more of. Really should have highlighted the DVD more than the CD in the promotions since the DVdD, rather than being a "bonus" ,is the gem of the set.

A strong Kennedy Center performance by all performers including a lot of surprisingly strong young musicians and surprisingly moving performance by season artists. Woody is alive.

I was at the concert, so it was nice to hear it again. Some of the tracks on the CD were not done at the concert, so that was a nice extra. This music speaks to the heart of the country and our history and needs to be kept alive. This compilation is a good way to fan the spark. Play it for your kids and help them understand the times when the songs were first sung.

I haven't watched the DVD yet so I can't comment on it. I will say this is a fun cd. I gave it four stars instead of five only b/c there are some things on it I find a little grating. For the most part though, I love it. A good, high-energy lively performance. Really love Track 9. House Of Earth by Lucinda Williams .
