Unrestrained genius at play,
By
This review is from: Woody Shaw Live 2 (Audio CD)
Woody is captured here at his peak, stretching out on four hard-driving tunes. His advanced hard-bop style is in full flower, pushing the boundaries of acoustic jazz to maximum intensity. The rhythm section of pianist Larry Willis, bassist Stafford James, and drummer Victor Lewis provide strong support. Carter Jefferson joins them on tenor and soprano for Willis's composition "Isabel the Liberator", and trombonist Steve Turre completes the quintet on the other three selections. Like Volumes 1 and 3, this is a vital testament for fans of the late, great, under-rated trumpeter.
