4.0 out of 5 stars cat and dog romance, November 23, 2011

This review is from: Woof: A Love Story (Hardcover)
What happens when a dog falls in love with the cat next door? He says, "I love you," and she hears "woof, woof." He whispers "you're pretty," and she hears "Grrr." Things don't look promising for young romance, until the dog digs up a bone in the yard. Not an ordinary bone--a trombone. The language of music bridges their differences, and the cat responds with a "meow" that means "I love you, too."

Outstanding illustrations give the book a pick-me-up, read-me-again quality. Unique collages combine photos, prints, textures, paintings, cutouts, and more in imaginative ways. The personalities of the nameless dog and cat shine on every page.

The text begins in jaunty rhyme:
A dog is a dog
and a cat is a cat,
And most of the time
it's as simple as that.
As the narrative continues the syntax becomes more complex, the rhythm falters in places, and some of the lines are forced. Still, the story is joyful and the message heartwarming. Kids will love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars MEOW!, April 1, 2010
This review is from: Woof: A Love Story (Hardcover)
They don't come any cuter than this book. The artwork and the text in WOOF are equally charming. I read this out loud to a Kindergarten class and it lead to the most wonderful discussion about love. Highly, highly recommend. I woof, woof, woof, woofed it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful!, March 4, 2010
This review is from: Woof: A Love Story (Hardcover)
I absolutely love this book! It has joined "Hip Cat" as one of my favorites. The rhyming is creative and flowing, and the rhythm is almost musical. As a previous reviewer said, it's so much fun to read, especially if you really ham it up. The story itself is so sweet - about love and its universal language - MUSIC!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for story time!, February 12, 2010
This review is from: Woof: A Love Story (Hardcover)
I found this book just in time for Valentines Day and am very glad I did. The pictures are great - beautiful and vibrant and they go along perfectly with a charming little story of a dog that falls madly in love with a cat. It's been quite a while since I've read a new picture book with such perfect rhyming! It flows so well it's as much a joy to read as it is for the audience to hear. This got quite a few giggles, especially when it's revealed that even though the dog is saying all these declarations of love, all that's coming out is a bunch of woof woofs. One big dig later, the dog learns to play the trombone and they communicate through the universal language of music. The book ends on the perfect note, with the cat finally declaring her love - of course all the dog hears is "meow".

There's alot of opportunity for the reader to really ham it up with this story. The more fun you have with it, I guarantee the more giggles you'll get. A great addition to any story time.

5.0 out of 5 stars This comical tale of hound dog love will delight the little ones and give them a case of the giggles! "Woof, woof, woof, woof!", January 12, 2010
This review is from: Woof: A Love Story (Hardcover)
Dogs and cats aren't necessarily crazy about each other because "A dog is a dog and a cat is a cat, And most of the time it's as simple as that." Dogs like to sniff in the air, run, pant, sniff, growl and, best of all, like to roll around on the ground if they aren't digging in it that is. Pee-yew, pew-yew, but that is what dogs are all about. Cats are a little more dainty and certainly aren't attracted to dogs in the least little bit, but one day something unusual happened. The dog, whose eyes became wide with wonder, could smell a dainty white green-eyed cat.

"She was white from her tail to the tip of her nose,
Which was tiny and pink as a cake-frosting rose.
His heart began thumping so hard in his chest,
He though lying down for a while might be the best."

The cat became alarmed because the hound dog look ferocious with those mighty fangs and falling in love with a dog was the last thing on her mind and she ran to the safety of some high up tree branches. The dog's heart was pounding and when he jumped and barked his "I love you!" to the lovely white cat she didn't quite hear it that way. "Woof, woof, woof, woof!" What could he do to convince that gorgeous cat that she was the cat's meow?

This comical tale of hound dog love will delight the little ones and give them a case of the giggles. This story was scintillatingly silly, but quite charming and the artwork caught the antics of a hound dog perfectly with the rocking and rolling around that no one but another dog could appreciate. As a story in rhyme it didn't miss a beat and with an animated reading it would be hilarious. This would be a perfect tale for circle or story time!
