One of the Best on the Market,

As a vet I have seen many dogs and cats that have suffered the ill affects from eating low quality diets, and raw food diets, which have caused illness and even death. This book has the correct information, it was well researched, and the recipes are nutrionally balanced. I highly recommend this one to all my patients. I also recommend the author's other book, Lapping it Up for cats.

My great dane is diabetic. Her health was taking a drastic turn for the worse. I was amazed to see such a turn-around in not only her health status; but her alertness, appetite, etc. Ms. Patricia O'Grady also gave me individual guidance counsel. I didn't feel like a number; but like someone she really cared about. I got to know her through Facebook. I have kept this book close at hand; and keep referring to it. The holistic attempt is all new to me, but because of the great results I have seen, I am willing to continue. I am even getting my second dog gradually onto this new diet.Woofing it Down: The quick & easy guide to making healthy dog food at home.

Surprised over the amount of corn included in recipes,

I read reviews of many dog food recipe books and this one seemed to be the best of the lot. That is until I received it. I'm sure that Ms. O'Grady means well but I am dumbfounded over the inclusion of corn and corn meal in the majority of the recipes. There is an old saying that goes something like this "Did you see the wolf in the corn field?" Of course, canines do not eat corn so there would never be a wolf in the corn field. But nearly all commercial dog food include such awful stuff as corn, corn meal, corn gluten, wheat, soy, animal by products, etc. There is a growing awareness that carbohydrates are fodder for cancer cells. Corn is only one grain carbohydrate and I certainly will not feed it to my dogs....I have six. (I also have a dog who has cancer and with my own devised home-made diet, devoid of corn and other grains, he is thriving and has long past his expected survival date.) The result is that I will edit these recipes if I use them at all....probably not. I wish that I could recommend a better book but I wouldn't buy this one had I known.
Here is a site about what should not be in dog food.....so why add it to home cooking? Please read this to learn more: [...] I think Ms. O'Grady needed to do some research before putting this book together.

This book saved my dogs life. I found this book well written, easy to understand, and my dog loves the food. My dog was ill, and I really thought I was going to lose her. As a last ditch attempt I decided to take her off dog food, and give these recipes a try. The change in my dog was immediate, nearly overnight, my dog took a turn for the BETTER!!! I highly recommend this book to anyone that owns a dog. I will never again feed a dog anything else but recipes from this book.

I think in all the years I've been an Amazon.com customer, this is probably my 2nd return (and I shop here a lot).
What a completely disappointing book. The recipes are heavy on flour, cornmeal, rice, other grains, simple sugars and carbohydrates. . . there is nothing at all in this book that remotely shows me that the author did any research or is even slightly knowledgeable about creating/making high quality dog food. Not at ALL what I was looking for. Completely useless.

Making dogs healthy,
This review is from: Woofing it Down: The quick & easy guide to making healthy dog food at home (Paperback)
The puppies seem more energetic since we started feeding them food from these recipes. Adding valuable as well as scary info made this a well worth guide to feeding our family of Yorkshires.

I found this book very helpful in getting me started with making meals for my pup. The recipes are basic and most can be made with items already in my pantry. The key though, is that my dog really loves everything I've made so far. I appreciate the nutritious ingredients and the fact that I can add extra vitamins and minerals to these recipes to make them even better. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to start feeding their dog a better diet than they could ever get with store-bought food.

If you own a dog, this is a MUST READ!! The book is worth the money just for all the recipes, but the added value of the information regarding pet food makes it a bargain. My dog loves his new home cooked meals, and I know I will never again be tempted to buy that junk off the store shelves again.

A lifesaver,

My dog hasn't been eating, and losing weight, refusing to eat anything. After being checked out my vet suggested this book to me, and she's doing GREAT. She has already put on some of the weight she has lost, and gets excited when I'm feeding her. She cleans her bowl now, making sure she doesn't leave one morsel behind, I'm amazed. I really feel that this book is a lifesaver, and I found all the recipes very easy to make.
