Book Description

A cleaning has been performed, and now the silo is without a sheriff. With only one good candidate available, Mayor Jahns and Deputy Marnes set off for the down deep to recruit her in person. Along the way, they discover much about each other, troubling news about this candidate, and stumble upon fractured alliances that could spell the doom of a silo they've worked long years to protect.

Mayor Jahns and Sheriff's Deputy Marnes have a journey to make. They have to go from the top level of "The Silo" to the bottom to interview a new replacement sheriff. The former sheriff, Holston, had volunteered for the cleaning. He wanted to go outside to clean the lenses of the camera and join his wife who had left 3 years before. He knew it was a one way ticket and that he would either die where his wife did or find her in the new world. Regardless, he could never return to the Silo.

The journey for Jahns and Marnes was not going to be an easy one they were getting older and going down the spiral staircase 144 floors would take days down and days back up the dreaded stairs. They had to do it to interview this new candidate for Sheriff. The one they thought might be the best for the job despite what the dreaded IT manager had said.....

I love Sci-Fi and this book is about the end of the world scenario and life in a hidden bunker for hundreds of years. The survivors don't really even know how long their families have lived underground but they do know it is blasphemy to talk of going outside.

What makes this story so wonderful is not the Sci-Fi part but the wonderful way the book is written. You will get involved with the characters' lives as well as their emotions and concerns. This book is artfully written and you will become engrossed in reading on just to see what happens next. It is a novel of an isolated society trying to survive for the preservation of the human race. Centuries of life have been spent underground and lost history indicates several uprisings that caused a great turmoil in the Silo. Keeping a tight knit society and working as a team is the key to continued survival.

5.0 out of 5 stars I wish all the installments were out :( December 4, 2011

Format:Kindle Edition
This story is so good and so well written I wish all the installments were out so I could just buy them all and stop sleeping. I love this author. I love the world he has created and the characters that live in it. I cannot wait to pounce on the next novella in the series.

In Wool 2 characters introduced in Wool are developed and we get to see more of the vast Silo humanity lives in. Fascinating, different and incredibly well done. I could not put it down.

3.0 out of 5 stars Same quality writing but without the action April 20, 2012
By mikej
Format:Kindle Edition
I am reading all 5 stories in a row and writing a review the day following. I loved the first story and how it was told and while this part of the story had the same superior writing style and editing, it did not have the momentum of the first story. I felt the first story would have been great as a stand alone short story, but this story I felt was just a way to give greater background on the lifestyle and make up of the silo vs having as much of a story behind it. I will say that the author went way behind what most writers do in explaining how the characters have survived in an underground silo for so many years... explaining their community, laws, commerce in a way that you don't find in many books about the world after it comes to an end. Great writing, but I just didn't feel engaged in teh story as I did in the first installment. Looking forward to reading part 3 later today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hugh Howey you left me hanging on a cliff, man!! February 1, 2012
Format:Paperback
Holyshite. I read Wool 1 and absolutely loved it. Awesome story about folks living in a silo. A BIG silo. Part of it is underground. Part above ground. In Wool 1 I learned about what it took to keep the silo's windows clean. In Wool 2 Mr. Hugh Howey gives us insight on just how this world is operated. What makes it tick. Where does the oxygen come from? The fuel? What the hell goes on in the bowels of that silo?

Enter Deputy Marnes and Mayor Jahns in this story. Making a journey down to the bottom of the silo to get their next sheriff. This journey is simply fascinating and Hugh Howey makes you feel like YOU are there. My legs hurt so bad after reading this book. :)

If you haven't read Wool 1 for goodness sake, do so! And then grab up this humongous adventure in a small novella.

In the ending Hugh Howey absolutely gives you NO choice but to get Wool 3. Talk about a cliffhanger.

Absolutely love Hugh Howey's writing. Truly the next GREAT sci-fi writer. I'm a diehard fan for sure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like Thanksgiving Dinner... December 5, 2011
By Steph M
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Once I had Wool 2 on my kindle, the excited feeling I had instantly reminded me of how I felt once I was seated at Thanksgiving Dinner. I could barely contain my excitement for the savory meal that was in front of me, but was slightly saddened for the fact that I knew it would be over quickly!

I really enjoyed Wool 2. It brings us back to the Silo to deal with the events of Wool. There is attention to character depth as well as to detail of surroundings. I was drawn in to quite a few characters in a short amount of time and I felt like I really know them well - I am not sure how the author did that this time around, but it was quite effective.

Going back to the plot of Wool, I found myself going back and forth - trying to guess one of two perceived possible outcomes and finally giving up until the book played itself out. It was quite a mindgame for me. In Wool 2, I was completely blindsided at the end and left desperately trying to turn more pages on the kindle. Thank goodness I hear that Wool 3 may very soon be on the way...?!

4.0 out of 5 stars too short :)
I'm truly enjoying these stories, but they really should be sold together, they are frustratingly short. Well written, they leave me immediately wanting more.
