Book Description

The silo has appointed a new sheriff. Her name is Juliette, and she comes not from the shadows of deputies, but from the depths of the down deep.

But what does being a mechanic have to do with upholding the law? And how will she be able to concentrate on the silo's future when she is surrounded by the ghosts of its past?

Before she can even settle in, the whirring gears of the silo begin to grind anew. Things aren't right. And the people whose help she needs the most are gone.

If Juliette isn't careful, she'll soon be among them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insanely good! The best WOOL yet! December 13, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I had the suspicion early on into "Casting Off" that this was going to be some awesome ride. Juliette - in my opinion - is easily the most compelling protagonist yet in this series, and you find yourself quickly rooting for her. Juliette's scenes with Lukas illustrate a deeper value as the plot unravels... you just KNOW there is so much more to discover about the underlying logic of this WOOL world by what Juliette's new friend offers to the story. I couldn't believe the varying degrees of emotion I felt throughout the last 20% of this book. Usually, I would be annoyed with a series that releases installments so short, but the author has really hit his stride with WOOL and should change NOTHING about how he is presenting these stories to us.

Seriously, read these books!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bang - Nailed it! December 13, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was thrilled to see that Wool 3 was out and bought it immediately. Then I proceeded to ignore everyone while I devoured this latest, and certainly the best, installment in Hugh Howey's Wool series. It was absolutely enthralling and there is no question that Hugh is a major talent that will someday be a household name.

Wool 3, Casting Off, starts up almost exactly where 2 left off save that you get a tantalizing glimpse of the near end of the story right up front. For those who don't yet know the series, a bit of a recap is in order. BEWARE: If you haven't read 1 and 2, then this has a tad bit of the spoiler in it and you may want to refrain if you haven't read them yet.

Wool 1 and 2 Spoilers start now.

Wool isn't what you think the title implies. Instead, it refers to the process of Cleaning. Cleaning the outside sensors of the Silo using a type of steel wool is their form of capital punishment because the Outside is deadly and cleaning helps to redeem your crime. Then you die. The Wool world takes place in a post-apocalyptic world..we think..where all of humanity lives in the Silo, a vast underground structure of truly staggering proportions. It's been so long since anyone has been above that they don't even remember such a thing and don't think people ever really did live outside. Even speaking longingly of Outside is a crime worthy of being sent to cleaning. In Wool, we lived the story of the Sheriff and his mistaken beliefs that sent him outside. In Wool 2, we see the story of the Mayor and Deputy as they seek the new Sheriff and open up mysteries and doubts and trouble that turns out to be deadly for one of them. Wool 2 has one of the most beautiful and touching tales of love that I have ever seen in print. Classics pale in comparison.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you Hugh! January 3, 2012
By Meg

I just want to thank Hugh Howey. I read Wool after it popped up as a recommendation, the commented that said the 'cover makes sense after you've read it' or the like, hooked me. I was very, very impressed! I've read all of them now, and have just purchased Wool 4. I can be a fairly jaded reader, particularly with sci-fi, I get fed up with the same old stories told the same old way. Hugh keeps me fascinated! So, thanks Hugh for inspiring me, entertaining me and giving me the childish pleasure of being a "follower" of something! Cheers!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the series. July 17, 2012
By Kat
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Juliette is an enigmatic character who reminds me of a Salander/Ripley who's caught in the inner workings of the "Matrix" while maneuvering an underground labyrinth the likes of the mining ship in "Alien." How apropos considering Ridley Scott is set to do the movie. There are riveting moments that make you feel like you're watching a car accident -- you don't want to look, close your eyes, but then have to peek through to find out what happens next.

The end left just enough hint of a possible budding relationship if the mystery pans out the way a reader can suspect. I came back for more of this enrapturing serial and can't wait for the movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars such a good series February 21, 2012
By Erica
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I love Juliette - it's so refreshing to see a female protagonist who's not only intelligent, but likable. She wears bravery and curiosity so well; there's no questioning her straightforward approach to things. No mind games. As more and more layers are peeled away from the history of the silo's past and the world around it, I just want to know MORE. Addictive? Yes. Can't get to the next installment fast enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars aaaaaaauuuggghhhh!!!! great read!! January 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I made a big mistake and took my Kindle to work with me - finished this during lunch hour and resisted the urge to hold sides of my head and yell loudly - HOW can you end this in the middle of my work day, and I hadn't bought & downloaded Wool 4???? Agree with the comment in an earlier post that says you get addicted to these books. Hugh, great story. I can't believe your head's cluttered with these characters. This needs to be made into a movie. Great plot, great character development. Bernard makes me want to slap him silly.. Gotta read the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun To Read! January 11, 2012
By Steph M
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Generally I only take the time to write reviews on items that I hate or love. So here I am again to praise the Wool series. I am having such a great time reading these books. For someone with a busy lifestyle such as mine, they are the perfect length - one or two sittings and these novellas can be completed.

I couldn't "turn" the pages of my kindle fast enough from about the 4th chapter on. And the end...? The VERY end, I mean. Why do I keep trying to guess what I think is going to happen next?! Now if you will excuse me, the download for Wool 4 has completed on my kindle...!

Each book more riveting than the last. Slightly unrefined and with the exceptional typo, these books are none the less raw and powerful in there hold on the reader. Bravo.
