For those who are charged with either proclaiming or furthering the academic understanding of the Word of God, having some good tools at your disposal is very important. Unfortunately, just as with carpentry, tools are expensive, and there's always the temptation to make due with something less than what is necessary.
I had begun collecting the Word Biblical Commentary series in hardback, piece-meal, through Amazon and e-Bay. It was a slow process, to say the least, with each volume costing at least $20 with shipping, if not more. I purchased this CD version containing 59-volumes, and am in the process of selling off my hard copies. Not only is this cheaper than collecting the full commentary set in hardback, it's faster, quicker to use, and allows me the convenience of always having this tool available to me, whether I'm on the road, at home, or sitting in my office.
The Word series provides a powerful examination of Scripture, dealing with the original languages, textual variants, and other issues that the linguistic student, scholar, or pastor might be interested in. An admirable job of fleshing out subtleties in meaning and understanding is demonstrated throughout. Each passage of Scripture is also dealt with from a historical critical and form critical perspective, which may or may not be of interest to you, depending on your theological bent. Overall the treatment is fairly conservative, but it's also clear that the authors of this series do assume some of the assertions of more liberal scholarship in terms of the text itself.
Fortunately, for the most part the application and commentary on the meaning of the text remains fairly solid. It provides good food for thought and a fairly conservative theological application. While I wouldn't recommend this be the *only* commentary set you have available to you, it's not a bad starting place - particularly if you can find the digital version for a good price.
