5.0 out of 5 stars A Handy Little Speller, February 18, 2006
This review is from: The Word Book II (Hardcover)
Back in the 80's when a typewriter, dictionary, and white out were the tools of a paper writing college student who could only dream of having a computer, this little book was a god send. Instead of being a big, unwieldy dictionary, it was small and handy. It has no definitions and its contents are limited to 40,000 words so you can zip to the word whose spelling you are unsure of. So if you are going to use the word "indispensable" and are wondering if it ends with "ible" or "able," just grab this lil red gem and you will know.

In these days of spell check, I reckon this book is sorta like a buggy whip, but I still have my copy on the desk next to the computer. I suppose I should use it more often than I do, but at least it is there if I'm feeling diligent. I also like the idea of knowing, or at least being cognizant of, how a word is spelled. I find that more appealing than just hitting some darn button and letting a machine do the work my brain can do. If you are an old, or even a young, curmudgeon like me and don't have this book, then send one of these fine used book sellers a penny, (plus shipping,) get one of your own, and exercise your brain.
