This book has really touched my heart and has shown me that God is so BIG and awesome!!! All the numerous ways that God used Joanne's ministry to bring the Balangaos to Him was incredible. All of the miracles mentioned in the book are amazing, and could have only happened through God.

Don't read this book if you don't want to be convicted of God's awesome power, of the need to 'go ye into all the world', and of the relatively powerless life most American Christians lead. The testimony of Joanne Shetler was an inspiration to me. My God is much greater than I give him credit for being. I intended to merely skim this book as research for a novel I'm working on, but the story compelled me to read every word and then read it--prayerfully--again.

For those looking for an inspirational missions book that is easy to read, look no further. A nice case study on how to reach animists--the right way.

This book is really a special book & special to me in certain ways. When I was in high school, our church was one of Jo's supporting churches so we would hear reports of the work from about the beginning. Then later I was able to get the book which put it all together since I had not remembered everything she had shared. I'm again re-reading it.

This is well written, flows naturally & is hard to put down.

One thing that I especially like about this & about Jo is that she is so honest & real. She tells on herself when what she originally thought proved to be wrong--like her relationship with the Balangao man who became Ama--her Father. Some older missionary biographies only show the victories & faith. They don't show the weaknesses of the person being written about. But Jo is open about those things. She is just a refreshingly honest & real person. Its not just fluff or all about some super spiritual person that none of us could identify with. She shows us her doubts & weaknesses & how God surprised her in so many ways.

Even though I know Jo & regularly get email updates, I hadn't realized that there was an updated version of the book. In fact I was thinking of suggesting an update since so many things have happened since it was written. I'll have to check that one out.

If you have an interest in missions or just wanting to see what mission work is like you will love this book.

A powerful real story with spiritual twists you don't expect. It blows some of my spiritual ideas out of the water and challenged me to be patient in life. An inspiring story of every-day women going where angels fear to tread because of their love for Jesus. I highly recommend this as a must read for any who want to know God's power and love more deeply.
