Editorial Reviews

It is a matter of debate whether Ken Nordines Word Jazz album (and its sequels) should be categorised as comedy, jazz or popular, or perhaps put into a category all of its own. Either way, Word Jazz is certainly unique; a mix of Ken narrating over cool jazz from the Chico Hamilton jazz group, who are billed as the Fred Katz group for the purposes of this album. The overall effect has been described as akin to a radio announcer performing beat poetry, which is probably as close a description as you are likely to get.

The title of this review is from one of the readings included on Word Jazz. Ken Nordine was a west coast D.J. who composed any number of poems that he read to Fred Katz's background music. The result was truly thought provoking in a Zen, Beatnik, wild sort of a way. The fidelity on this album is way down there as it was apparently recorded from an older vinyl pressing. It's still worth it however, even if for waking up at 3:00 and saying, "What Time Is It?"

I remember when thoe orginal recording came out. The big ""Hit"" was The Midnight Snack. Even rock 'roll stations played it. I had a cassette of it but it disappeared, so I was glad to find the CD. Ken had one of the GREAT voices in the business. We don't find great voices in broadcasting anymore. In fact they're getting worse.

word jazz ... i first heard this album at a party at stanford u in the mid 1960's and i have wanted a copy of my own ever since. some of the material is a little dated but it is still quite entertaining and funny.

Summary: my idea of Word Jazz and this recorder’s idea of Word Jazz are different.

My memories of Word Jazz involved people playing with word sequences that flowed, resulting in fun to really bizarre images created by the flow of words. In particular, the images created were not based in everyday reality. This recording is more of a Beat style poetry reading. It tells stories. Fun in its way, but not what I was looking for. I listened to it once and got rid of it.

I want to be clear there is nothing wrong with Ken Nordine’s reading. He has a fun voice to listen to. Rather, the issue for me was the content. Based on my exposure to performances a long time ago in small venues on the East Coast, this was Beat poetry rather than Word Jazz. Please be warned that I am no music expert at all. It may be that the small venues I originally heard these styles at labeled the performances in a way that did not match the alternative main stream. I will never know. However, for me, this CD was disappointing for that reason.
