1.0 out of 5 stars A disservice to both logophiles and language., September 5, 2009
This review is from: The Word Lover's Delight: Awesome Adjectives, Nifty Nouns, and Vibrant Verbs to Make YourVocabulary Sizzle (Paperback)
Overly simplistic definitions, devoid of etymology or any sense of nuance.

For example, the words sanguine and sanguineous are listed consecutively, one defined as showing hope or cheer and the other as relating to or containing blood. That's it. No elucidation of the root of the words, no mention of the four humours, no explanation for two obviously connected words having two completely different meanings.

Many of the example sentences provided to supplement the simplistic definitions remind one of an elementary student's attempt to use a vocabulary word in a sentence, and at times contradict the simple definition given.

The space in the book spent on trite quotes and wordplay would be better used to provide substance for the book's advertised content, namely, definitions of words.

Word lovers looking for the enriching, at times amusing resource that "The Word Lover's Delight" purports to be should consider tracking down a copy of Mrs. Byrne's Dictionary of Unusual, Obscure, and Preposterous Words

This is one that didn't even make it to my reference shelf. It was poorly researched and overly simplified. Some of the entries didn't even have correct definitions. Not good. Buy one of the other many wonderful word reference books out there. I suggest Erin McKean.
