Everybody knows Robertson's Word Pictures to be an excellent reference for Bible study.
But I was deceived by this edition of his work: no greek, no grammar explained. It is an abridged version !
Maybe I made an error in choosing this edition, but don't make the same, and buy the original version !

A.T. Robertson is one of those rare scholars. In his day he was the most cited American scholar in European New Testament Greek scholarship. In other words he was well respected, and rightfully so. This six volume set is a great gift to posterity. Those knowledgeable in Greek and those who are not will both benefit from Robertson's comments. Those who are not familiar with Greek may have some difficulties. Although the Greek is transliterated, many of the observations are chalked full of nomenclature from his grammar. Those who know Greek may struggle from time to time as his terminology is different than that found is modern grammars. But all that being said, to have a scholar of Robertson's ability giving commentary on each verse of the New Testament, drawing nuances from the original language is indeed edifying. There are a few fallacies here and there, as the understanding of New Testament Greek grammar and lexicography have progressed in the last seventy years. I found the work to be the strongest in the gospels and in Acts. The Pauline corpus and the general epistles had terse comments which were not as helpful. Acts on the other hand was full of lexical jewels. The mentioning of Classical Greek and Septuagintal usages of the lexical stock were enlightening. The author (in Acts) makes several grammatical parallels to other Greek literature. While this set will not replace the excellent modern commentaries on the books of the New Testament, it is indeed a valuable reference just because of who Robertson was as a scholar.

I got the sample and it revealed the nature of this edition.
In the preface:
"In 1996, B&H made a decision to create a concise edition of WP. In doing so, we decided to give priority to A.T. Robertson's discussions of Greek words, Technical discussions of Greek grammar and syntax have been eliminated from this edition. Also, much of the biblical back ground material has been taken out in order to make possible a manageable, one volume edition of WP" (Preface to Concise Edition).

I have used WPNT in my personal study and in my class prep for decades. It gives more than just the definitions of the Greek words. It gives the feel and taste of the passage as well.
I wish there were more like this!

This is a standard Bible study tool that is of use to the Greek and non-Greek reader. It was originally published in 1934. Robertson provides short comments on most verses in the NT. Most of the notes are technical in nature, but some are devotional. He often gives the Greek word underlying an English word, parses some Greek words, and at times, provides an alternative translation to the KJV that the work is based on.

Unfortunately, he also supplies some textual notes. I say unfortunately as in his comments he assumes the newer (at his time) Critical Text was more reliable than the Textus Receptus. Personally, I prefer the TR and even more so, the Majority Text. I detail my reasons for preferring the MT in my book Differences Between Bible Versions.

But other than this textual deficiency, Robertson comments are generally helpful. I purchased the hardcopy set years ago and referred to it often in my personal Bible studies. When I started working on my Analytical-Literal Translation of the New Testament: Third Edition (ALT), I purchased the BibleWorks software program, which contains Robertson. And I often referred to Robertson as I was working on my translation. Its comments were often helpful in deciding how best to translate a passage.

So I recommend this resource.

A. T. Robertson is a brilliant Greek scholar. His word pictures in the New Testament help shed like on biblical passages by fleshing out the nuances of words and phrases as they were understood by the original reader. A very good and helpful resource.

Upon an initial glance at one passage (immediately after downloading this volume) I find that it is not completely devoid of the Greek, as another review might lead you to believe. However, it is an abridged edition, containing less information than my hardcover 6 volume set. Overall, I expect it to be a handy quick-reference that will give some insight without too much detail.
