Written mainly to increase vocabulary proficiency among high school and college students preparing to take the SAT, ACT, GRE, and other standardized tests, this book-- with its supplementary audio compact disc--tackles students' word-power and verbal reasoning challenges with an extensive set of word lists, a battery of short tests, detailed vocabulary-building tips, and recommended reading advice. The vocabulary lists and tests are categorized by subjects, which include arts terms, science terms, social science terms, foreign words and phrases, and word roots. Two additional chapters concentrate on the "hot 300" words test takers need to know when taking the SAT and the GRE, respectively. Building what the author calls a "mighty word arsenal" includes knowing how to use some words of many syllables and still other words that are tricky to pronounce. The accompanying compact disc concentrates on word pronunciation and offers many examples of contextual word usage.
