5.0 out of 5 stars probably the best
My child's Beestar online vocabulary program listed this book as a reference. We purchased it following the recommendation. What a fantastic result it brings. My child's reading level is at top of his class now... I believe this book has the ability to change a child's perspective on learning words. Not only is Wordly Wise well-designed and challenging, but it's also fun...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I was hoping for
Almost all the words are a little too simple.

Almost all he activities are a little too boring.

This book is definitely low on my kids' list of things to work on around here.

The best way to learn vocabulary really is to read books, preferably with a pack of post-its so you can go back and look up any words that you do not know...

Not only is Wordly Wise well-designed and challenging, but it's also fun. It's an effective vocabulary learning system that I would recommend to anyone with school-age kids. My neighbor has a 15 years old daughter who used this book. She still remembers the words she learned from Wordly Wise when she was 8 years old. It's a treasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars SUGGESTIONS, August 1, 2010
At levels 2 & 3 the answer keys are time saving but optional. At levels 4-12 I would not be without them. At level 4 you move up to 20 lessons/book. There is a significant difficulty increase.BOOK 3 IN THE 2ND EDITION IS THE EQUIVALENT OF THE SECOND HALF OF BOOK B AND ALL OF BOOK C IN THE 1ST EDITION.

Wordly Wise 3000, 2nd Edition is our top pick for a vocabulary program when you place a student at a level that is appropriate for the child. If you have been using the 1st edition (no color on the page) you must add 3 to the number to get the similar book in the 2nd edition, which has color on the pages. If the child can not already use half the words in the word list correctly in a sentence, back up a level. Although the words are chosen from grade level texts for the first meaning of the word, what they do with them is challenging. They work the multiple meanings of the word. They will work with synonyms and antonyms and analogies. At levels 4 and up, 1n one multiple choice section, anywhere from one to four choices may be correct, using one or more meanings of the word. The questions for the reading comprehension section are challenging and often require a good deal of thought.

For students working at the beginning level at any age, we suggest that Monday you go to [...] and listen as they pronounce through the word list, meanings, and example sentences. while they read along in their book. Then do Exercise 1. On Tuesday, re-listen to the words online, then do Exercise 2. on Wednesday, re-listen and do Exercise 3. Your goal on Exercise 4 should be to get them to the point that they can successfully do 5 comprehension questions a day in Exercise 4 by the end of book 3. To get there, it may be necessary to start out doing two sentences a day for five days. As they get confident at that, move it up to 3, 3, and 4 sentences. Once they are successful at this level, move them up to five a day. When they get to book 4 they will be answering 15 queations, and it would be good if they can do at least 5 a day.

If writing is a challenge for your child and gets in the way of their thinking through an answer, let them talk out their answer with you. Once they have their answer formulated as a complete sentance, you be their scribe and write it down for them. Then they can recopy it
It may be easier to copy onto lined writing paper, rather than into the book.

Wean them from needing you as a scribe as they are able. Support them when they are having a bad day. Although your goal is to foster independent success, it is often helpful to scaffold along the way. This is true for both the early learner and the remedial older student. Ignore thoughts of where a child "should be"; back up to whatever point they can be independently successful and work intensively from there until they catch up.

Do not hold a younger sibling back for fear of embarrassing an older child. Let each go as fast as they are able, as slow as they need to in all areas.Find and affirm each child's strengths; support each to strengthen areas of weakness. Recognize that a child may have a several year span in ability across different subjects. No "canned" program can possibly be right for them in all areas. Tailor your program to your child. You are teaching a child, not a curriculum!

You are not done with these words. They will be used repeatedly in future lessons as synonyms, antonyms and in analogies. At [...], there are FREE fun games to review the words after every 4 -5 chapters. Play these on Friday. Optional multiple choice tests are available, for purchase, but the games are a lot mo

5.0 out of 5 stars reading challenge, January 3, 2008
My children have used this seris for spelling since first grade. The reading passages are challenging and informative. Many passages address topics they would otherwise never encounter. When I help them with their work I always learn something too.

My daughter used these books all through elementary and high school. She recently scored a 32 in reading on the ACT. They are excellent. We were doing so many wonderful activities: reading excellent books, nature study, etc. that she didn't mind spending a little time each day with this curriculum--in fact she seemed to find it interesting. She has an extremely advanced vocabulary now and has been accepted into an excellent nursing program. Highly recommended.

Just started using the book today with my 7 year old son. I like the format and he seems to like it as well. I am happy with this book and will purchase the next level up to work with him this summer.
