Wordmaster delivers on fun and just the right amount of challenge. There are two styles of gaming, Wordmaster mode and Anagram mode. In Wordmaster mode you are given 8 chances to guess a six letter word in one of several categories. Each category has a subject that gives you a little bit of a clue. You also get clues as you try to figure out the word. If you have picked out the correct letters but they are in the wrong spot, the game lets you know. If you have picked out a correct letter in the correct spot it lets you know that too. The faster you guess the correct answer the more points you get. You work your way up from Novice through several levels to Wordmaster.
The Anagram mode is a little different. Each word is still six letters but the game does not let you know if you have chosen the right letters or not. This is the only thing I wish was different in the game. If it worked like the Wordmaster part of the game it would be a lot more fun in my opinion. It does give you a subject category just like the Wordmaster section. In this section you only get four guesses. Definitely a challenge but in a fun way. All in all great game. It keeps your attention, challenges you just enough and it's tons of fun to play. I pick this one up and play it everyday since I got it. Nice one to add to your DS collection!

There is nothing exciting about this game, but if you like "Jumbles" from the newspapers this will be right up your alley. In anagrams, you rearrange the letters to form a word. In wordmaster, you are given a clue and have to give a 6 letter word. If you give a correct letter that letter lights up, if you place a letter in the correct position, it is in a different color. You have 10 tries to get it correct. The clues are strange at times, but you can just randomly select letters to figure out the word--you dont have to spell a real word. The bonus round give a list of words with a letter or two missing in each row and you add the correct letter. It gives you the choice of writing the letter or choosing from an alphabetical list of letters. There is no save button--everything is saved automatically.
I love word games so I am enjoying this, but if you are looking for bells and whistles, look somewhere else.

Not "Hundreds of Word Puzzles" but hundreds of variations of "guess the six-letter word",

I wish I had spent more time reading the description on the back of the box. I bought it after reading the blurb on the front that said "Hundreds of Word Puzzles". If I had paid more attention I would have read the small print on the back where it says "Wordmaster uses your vocabulary and spelling skills to deduce hidden 6-letter words."
That's right, ONLY 6-letter words. There are really only three games - "Guess the 6-letter word", "Guess the 6-letter anagram", and the "Bonus Round" fill in the blank letter of the 6-letter words. It is not a BAD game, especially if you like jumbles, but if you want to improve your vocabulary you might want to try "My Word Coach", which I have found to be a lot more fun.

As a huge word game fan, I was very disappointed in how repetitive this game actually is with the clues. At first glance, the game seemed challenging, but after spending a couple of hours playing this game, it became easier and easier to solve the clues. This might be a fun game for young teens, but beyond that, it's pretty much a waste of money and time.

I am a huge word game fan, so I picked this game up knowing very little about it.
My major complaint is that, unlike other games that turn the DS sideways to use, there is no left-handed option on this game so I find myself sometimes covering up my gameboard with my hand as I write. Just a bit disappointing. (Yes, there is an option to click on letters instead of writing them by hand... but I'm so much more comfortable using my left hand even for that.)

While waiting for my daughter to finish her piano lessons, I picked up her DS and sampled Brain Age 2. I enjoyed it so much that Santa put a DS and games in my stocking for Christmas this year! WordMaster is one of the games I received. WordMaster tests your memory of 6 letter words, and the graphics are charming. I recommend it for those who want to add more brain exercises to their game library.

Even though I love words and language and literature, there's something about my brain that's just not wired right to solve anagrams or fill in crossword puzzles.
(I try to do the Jumble every day, and can usually get 2 or 3 of the words unscrambled. But then I hit a wall, and end up tossing the paper away in disgust at my own obtuseness.) Put simply: this is a challenging game, more so if you're a numbskull like me. The Wordmaster piece of the game is sort of like doing a crossword puzzle, but without the hints that start to take shape as you fill in the other clues in the puzzle. The initial clues you receive are brief and oftentimes hint at the answer in a terribly roundabout way. You may find yourself shouting out to family members as you play, reading them the clues and asking for their guesses. If you like solving anagrams, doing crossword puzzles, or playing word games in general, you'll like this game. It will test the limits of your vocabulary and deductive skills. It's definitely not for children, with the exception of those Doogie Howser-style whiz kids who graduate Harvard at age 14. As for me, I'm hoping that by playing this game, it will help whip my brain into shape so that I can do better at the Word Worm sections of the Cranium board game (my main weakness, aside from the clay sculpting, and I've accepted the fact that my sculptures are never going to get any better, aside from when I'm asked to do "snake").

That's my first thought when I got the Wordmaster DS. There's only TWO games on there! Wordmaster and Anagrams.
I don't know, I guess I got the impression that there was going to be alot of word games. My mistake. With that said, the two games are fun. I enjoyed the games. They give you clues to guess what the word is which helps alot. If you like word games, especially Anagrams, this is for you. If you are looking for a bunch of variety games, look elsewhere. They should have added some more games such as hangman maybe? Or some other word fun.

I already own and LOVE Bookworm and Crosswords DS so I added Wordmaster to my wishlist as well. I received it for Christmas last night and I was frustrated from the get go. The instructions are limited and I couldn't believe that was all there was to the game. There are two options: Wordmaster and Anagram. The Wordmaster game is pretty much "OK, here are 6 empty spaces and a basically unrelated one word clue: What is the 6-letter word?" No hints, no options for additional clues and the clue they give you is so loosely related, it's really not helpful at all. Anagrams is not much better, but at least there you know which letters will be used.
I fully admit that I am not a member of MENSA and maybe I'm just not enough of a "lexiphile" to enjoy this game. I thought it would be a fun addition to the word games I already love, but this is not even in the same arena. I play for fun, not frustration.

Yep, I recieved this game as a birthday gift. I thought this was another word search game but it turns out to be anagrams.
Which are a different ball game all together. You can be a Novice which you get 9 tries of guessing what the word will be. Apprentice 8 tries, Adept 7 tries,Master 6 tries, Wordmaster 5 tries. Each level allows you less tries to solve the puzzles. The goal of the game is to discover the hidden word. The neat thing that I didn't know is that you also can win trophies, maybe high scores are with any other games you play now but trophies are different like your bragging rights to prove it.The little buddha shakes his head when your wrong, and he gives you the touch down sign when you win the clue. Something different than the word search. It's all anagrams. |
