This review is from: Martin's Big Words...and More Stories from the African-American Tradition (Scholastic Video Collection) (DVD)
I don't often recommend a DVD over a book, but after showing this once again to grades 3-5 without so much as a peep from one kid lends testimony to just how powerful and moving this version of Martin's Big Words is. As seen in the sample provided, church organ music plays as a back drop to the historical events of the Civil Rights Movement in which King bravely led the way. Much of the book directly quotes King.If you prefer to read the book, by all means please read it. At the end of the book version, Martin's I Have A Dream speech is quoted. On the DVD version, it's King, himself, speaking those amazingly powerful words that resonate so powerfully even today. My students sat transfixed and that just doesn't ever happen. I know that there are other stories on this DVD, and I'm sorry to say, I haven't watched, or shown, those. It's worth purchasing just for the King book alone. |
