Product Description

Amazon.com

Today he's best remembered as the composer of the country-folk standard "City of New Orleans." When he died in 1984 following a 15-year bout with leukemia, however, the Chicago-based singer/songwriter was among the most beloved of the '70s school of folkies. Words We Can Dance To is the second title in Red Pajamas Records' five-CD Goodman reissue program. Originally put out by Asylum in 1976, it finds the elfin Goodman switching hats from song to song. "Roving Cowboy" is MOR folk-rock, "Unemployed" is a good-natured faux blues, "Between the Lines" is given a western-swing treatment, and "Old Fashioned" is lush and lovable pop. The album is marred by a few ill-advised rockers ("Tossin' and Turning," "Can't Go Back"). Still, Goodman had charm coming out of his ears, and it imbues this affectionate collection. --Steven Stolder

5.0 out of 5 stars I knew Steve May 17, 2013
Format:Audio CD
Greetings-
I'm an old folkie/blue grass/blues/country picker. I knew Steve, we met several times on the road, and had hours of pickin' and grinnin' together, often along with other of his/our contemporaries, names you likely know if you're reading this. Steve was and is an amazing songwriter. His humour stood out even in the tunes that might be somewhat sad, he always kept tongue firmly in cheek and sense of humour fully in gear at all times. Steve was honest to a fault, a great human being, and it was my privilege to know him.

I have all of his albums, and play them often. I like this one a lot. Some tunes here show a different sort of Steve, his takes on some other people's tunes and the electric guitar. I see one of Steve's albums being sold for over $30USD used on Amazon, and that's appalling to me. It's not as though Steve's family was getting the money, so I couldn't see paying that much for what is, to me, his least-best album. This album is one of the better ones in my collection, and I heartily recommend it to you, dear reader. I'll venture to say that you'll not be disappointed by it.

I'll also suggest that if you're interested in Steve's music, you'll be interested to learn about the man. Look him up on Wikipedia, get to know him a little better. You'll likely appreciate the music even more when you know the man better. Steve was an honest, great guy, and a fine musician, and a gifted, witty songwriter. I'm grateful that I knew him, and happy to see that more people like you are discovering Steve.
Enjoy! ;)

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great album, but...... April 26, 2006
Format:Audio CD
This is a great album, but I have to disagree with the amazon reviewer. "Tossin' and Turning" and "Can't Go Back" are not "ill-advised rockers". They are the best songs on the album! Steve Goodman's vocals on "Tossin' and Turning" are simply amazing. If you're a Steve Goodman fan you won't be disappointed by this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Also Disagrees June 14, 2006

I also disagree with "Tossin' and Turning" and "Can't Go Back" being labeled as "ill-advised rockers". In addition to the great vocals on "Tossin' and Turning", Goodman performs a killer electric guitar solo, something he didn't do often.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good album April 11, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Funny, clever and musically diverse as it is I cannot give 5 stars since that were to neglect the fact that Steve has made slightly better albums. Stii you have to roll with the punches since he no longer is among us and can't deliver new songs from whereever he is out there. This means: get the album and be entertained at quite a quality level.
