With a grace characteristic of a 16th century mystic, Mother Teresa shares with the reader the gentle wisdom of her soul. Though her personal experiences were extraordinary, her challenge to love, and to view suffering itself as the "kiss of Jesus" is relevant, timeless, and deeply affecting. A joy as devotional material or for insight into the mind and heart of a modern day saint.

Unbelievable as it may seem, this book is still in print, 26 years after it was published. The book is based on interviews between film writers, Michael Nabicht, and Gaynell Cronin, as they visited with Mother Teresa of Calcutta; the text in this book was compiled by Frank J. Cunningham, while the photos were taken by Patrick Delahanty. The film was entitled, Work of Love.

Those who have followed the journey of Mother Teresa through media, film, biographies, and her personal writings will reap the reward of "staying in touch" with others' needs, be they in the streets of Calcutta, or "in the house nearby".

Mother Teresa went to Calcutta to bring attention to the struggles and pain of those who are marginalized, rather than to just care for the sick and forgotten. Her followers, both religious and lay, continue her mission of caring for others. The cause lives on.

Most of the contents of this book are her personal writings which can be seen as quiet meditations or prayers with God. Jesus is always the center focus of her work, her prayers, her life. Take a brief look at the seven chapter titles: 1) Jesus - the Bread of Life, 2) We Do It for Jesus, 3) The Family of God, 4) Prayer Changes Our Hearts, 5) The Family - a Place to Learn Jesus, 6) Suffering - the Kiss of Jesus, and 7) Love Seeks to Serve.

One of my favorite segments has to do with a woman suffering from cancer; Mother Teresa prays with her and says, "Now you come so close to Jesus on the cross that he is kissing you." The ailing woman turns to Mother Teresa and says, "please tell Jesus to stop kissing me." Suffering is not a punishment; it is a gift. Someone who can relate to the "cancer situation" can focus on this particular incident, and hopefully, apply this story to his or her own life, and, "down the line", be a source of hope for another cancer patient.

Another chapter, entitled "The Family - A Place to Learn Jesus" tells us that the family is the best and surest way to learn the love of Jesus. You will find simple and profound words in this book; there are no digital photos or artist renderings; even the type is plain. The message is in the words.
