Designed to help teachers working with transitional readers in the within word pattern stage of spelling development (Grades 1 — 4), the sorts in this companion volume help students begin contrasting long and short vowels and sorting words by grammatical and semantic features.  The book begins by reexamining short- and long-vowel sounds with picture sorts, moving on to word sorts to thoroughly examine vowel patterns and assess students’ understanding of short- and long-vowel patterns.  The text moves on to dipthongs and other ambiguous vowel sounds, and finally to complex consonants and consonant clusters, contractions, inflectional endings and homophones.

Responses from the field…

A strength of each chapter is the Notes for the Teacher section that introduces each set of sorts.  This reminds teachers about developmental appropriateness and pacing variations based on learner needs.  Clearly the gradual release of responsibility model of guided instruction is promoted and reinforced throughout the text.

Barbara Pettegrew, Otterbein College

Chapter layout is excellent.  Format is designed to include anything that might be needed for the lesson, and each takes you step by step through the process being taught, allowing time for students to internalize and firm up the skills and strategies.

Susan K. McCloskey, California State University, Fresno

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid information December 21, 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This program, Words Their Way, has been a tremendous help in my classroom. After giving the spelling test to determine what kind of spellers the students are (alphabetic, within word or derivational), I was able to break down my lessons and develop better spelling habits for my students. The book is completely thorough in that it gives the actual lesson as well as RTI-based interventions for the kids who still don't get it or who need more of a challenge. The books are scaffolded on each other, yet each lesson is usable in and of itself. My students are learning how to spell with mehtods that make sense, I'm seeing great results and there are no more weekly spelling lists. The words are real-life, ones that are used naturally in their writing. Highly recommended, as long as you know what kind of speller you're working with (determined by the information spelling test).

5.0 out of 5 stars Word Within Pattern January 30, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have used Words Their Way for years. I probably have all the editions. I like the individual stages books as they focus on just that stage with many activities. Easy to copy the sorts from the smaller book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have for Words Their Way June 21, 2011
By SNotes
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
If you truly plan on implementing Words Their Way...you MUST have these supplemental books. Worth the small investment. Pages can be torn out, or spiral bound or put in a 3-ring binder for ease in copying. They do go hand in hand with original WTW book, so keep them both for creating word lists and games.

This book is excellent for helping teachers of students who are behind the rest of the class in reading or who need extra help with phonics, spelling or decoding. This book contains word and spelling patterns that are most useful in helping a child better understand the structure of language and how to use it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for beginner adults May 12, 2009
Format:Paperback
In teaching adults ESL, I find it very useful in that it provides a mixture for the student that has challenges with the english language. The Sort tables are very helpful in identifying by picture what the work is and their meaning.
