I needed this book for a literacy class. THere are many useful ideas for encouraging literacy, teaching phonics, and building word analysis skills amongst students in primary school. However, there is nothing terribly unique about this book. I've seen many of these ideas in other publications. The CD-rom that comes with the book is difficult to navigate. WHile the CD-rom has good print outs of games and phonics sheets, the templates were embedded in a mass of advertisment and product information.

I would reccomend this book to student-teachers/teachers with little or no experience in the classroom and with little or no knowledge of language acquisition and linguistics.

I am using this text with 8th graders who are on a 4th grade reading level. I began at the 6th chapter. Learning roots and word origins is giving them another handle by which they can hold on to and retrieve word sounds. They are enjoying it so far.

I have been teaching for 5 years and this book has been invaluable to me. I loaned my copy to a colleague and never got it back so I had to buy another copy right away. This book has the DSA test in it to show you at what level your students are spelling and what to teach them to get them to the next level successfully. The lessons and suggestions in it are wonderful and the CD has a lot of great lessons and learning games. It would be great for a parent too if they want to help their child get ahead!

I LOVE this book! The CD has excellent printable resouces for word sorts and games. This book has helped me teach my 1st grade students to look at word patterns when spelling and decoding. I have seen the improvements it makes with my students in just a few short weeks!

I am preparing to teach elementary school (after having taught elementary band) and my literacy teacher recommended this book. She knows what she is talking about. This book is a great resource for elementary school teachers (especially new teachers) with many, many detailed ideas ready to use in the classroom. I have used it to teach lessons in my practicum classroom. During my very first lesson, my mentoring teacher was so impressed that she let me have the entire afternoon to expand on my lesson and work with her class. The ideas in this book engage the children and target the various levels of literacy development. I highly recommend it.

I was very impressed with this book. I use it as an accompaniment to two others; Word Journeys by Ganske and Word Sorts for Within Word Pattern Spellers by Invernizzi. All three work together having the students combine word sorting and the sounding out words with spelling which generates investigation and critical thinking by the students.

This approach not only is a effective for the sutdents but also for the teacher. Teachers learn where the students learning levels are and what levels need work.

The same great book, now has a CD to allow printing of the sorts. Although it does not seem to offer all the sorts, it is a nice bonus. I also ordered the first three levels and the new sort-sheets in the lowest level are nicely grouped by consonant with a spot for writing practice.

This book arrived in excellent condition. It was exactly as listed and is very helpful with preparing hands on lessons in phonics. It is a great resource in preparing for Literacy Center instruction.

The book was in pretty good condition for it to be so inexpensive! It still contains the CD that accompanies the book. Though I haven't used it yet...The shipping was pretty good too. The book contains a lot of pertinent information for teachers especially for literacy purposes.

An excellent book for Primary School teachers seeking a better way to support student learning in spelling.
