While at the University of Nevada, Reno (where co-authors Donald Bear and Shane Templeton teach), I was required to have this book for my language arts method class. It is very practical, and teachers will enjoy the games and word sorts which help reinforce spelling, vocabulary, and phonics instruction. This book has a little bit of theory regarding the levels of reading literacy, but the majority of the book is devoted to word study activities.
This is a book that belongs on every teacher's bookshelf, and it is a book teachers will refer to time and again. It is a book designed to be USED, not talked about.

This book was assigned as part of my Master's in Reading program. It is well-written and easy to use. Ideas are plentiful. Sections include material which may be photocopied and used in the classroom or clinic setting. It helps inform teacher instruction and provides an excellent resource that honors the synchrony of reading, writing, listening and spelling. I use it and have seen results!

This is a wonderful book filled with ideas. It also comes with an online PDToolkit referenced throughout the book. It was to be up and running on July 2, 2011. I was unable to find a way to log on. I sent an email through their customer service and did not receive a reply. I spent an hour and a half before finally connecting to someone who could answer my question. The Toolkit has not been finished and won't be until "late summer". I suggested that they correct the website. If you should have issues the phone # is 1-800-848-9500. Select invoice and billing.

I am a huge fan of the old Words Your Way book and CD. The web site does not work and you will receive no additional resources. You are much better off ordering the old CD and books. They should not have sold this book until the web site is completed. Oh and by the way, you will have to pay an additional fee for the web resource after the first 6 months. This is not worth the cost!!!!!!!

This book is an excellent resource for school board members, administrators, teachers, tutors, reading specialists, or anyone who believes that there has to be a better way of providing traditional diagnostic reading instruction.
Words Their Way offers a complete package for working with young readers. Carefully constructed within a wide range of activities is an adherence to a developmental philosophy of learning, assessment methods, and instructional strategies for a range of ages.
This book is a MUST for any reference library.

I bought the 5th edition of Words Their Way: Word Study for Phonics, Vocabulary, and Spelling Instruction (5th Edition) (Words Their Way Series)for our teachers and we were all excited about the PD Toolkit. However, besides it not being available until just recently, it is useless. You can't personalize anything, there is no help available, no contact info - it's just extremely unfriendly. My teachers are very frustrated. Wish I would have purchased an older edition with the CD. I contacted Pearson via email and I got a form "letter" and nothing else.

I teach elementary special education, and this is a must-have for what I do. Our school bought one copy per grade level. I liked it so much that I purchased my own copy. Yes, it's expensive, but it's full of information. You won't know how you taught without it.

After reading and trialling many spelling programs this one seems like the best fit for all my students.
I like the way it is presented and easy to follow with it all making sense.

Here are two recent reviews of Words Their Way:
This book is a must read for teachers who are interested in not only improving spelling and vocabulary, but in improving the competency of their students as readers and writers. (Thompson, S. (1998). "Professional Bookshelf," The California Reader, 31 (3), pp. 33-34.)
We suggest that Words Their Way be kept on a convenient shelf for daily reference in every teacher's classroom for easy access and use." (Shanahan, S., Macphee, J., McMillen, L., Lynch, M., Hester, J., Brodzik, K., (1997). "Materials that make the mark: Explicit skills instruction." Language Arts, 74, pp. 291-292.)

The information within the book is absolutely great. It's easy to read and there are many resources within the books (Appendixes).

The only drawback and reason I gave 3 stars; my disappointment in the PDtoolkit that they eagerly promote "Ground-breaking online PDtoolkit...." The publishers make it sound so easy to use and to claim that there are tons of additional resources, not included with the book, but I could not find them.

I am so thankful that I did NOT pay to subsribe to this service. It's very difficult to use. I was excited about the option of watching the videos (as I am very visual), but the videos aren't helpful, at all. They seem to be random classroom commentaries or discussions, rather than actual step by step videos of how to use,( all new how-to videos, as the publishers claim)or implementation of the program... They claim to have over 40 videos, but I kept seeing the same videos over and over. You have to be quite specific in your choice of words when searching for a specific video. I would often get a message, "could not find information" and I had typed in the words "emergent stage".

I highly recommend the book if this is your introduction to Words Their Way, but do not purchase it for the PDtoolkit.Unless it improves in ease of use and there are actually more purposeful and useful resources that aren't offered in the book, I won't purchase a subscription...
