This review is from: The Words They Need: Welcoming Children Who Are Deaf and Hard of Hearing to Literacy (Paperback)
I am extremely disappointed in this book. :-( I've been studying Deaf Education for over 15 years now. The author completely assumes that deaf and hearing children learn in the exact same matter! This isn't true! You can't expect verbal phonics to work with deaf children! Common sense will tell a person that! The book is written totally from an "oral" perspective. Some children (who have just a mild loss) might be very successful at learning via the oral method. But that is only a SMALL percentage of the deaf/hard of hearing population. What about learning through a language rich classroom environment that includes the use of American Sign Language?
