Cinematic Pop Perfection, Investigate Now!,

This is a beautiful record, completely out of it's time - just ravishing pop. Echoes of Arthur Lee, Brill Building pop, and Tim Hardin abound but never swamp the groups own identity. Best of all, when indie artists approach this territory it often is fronted by some fey, whispering charlatan. Not the Music Lovers - Ted Edwards channels Scott Walker through his quite devestating croon. This is my album of 2004!

This review is from: Words We Say Before We Sleep (Audio CD)
I usually despise music that tries to incorporate "lounge" type styles with more modern pop and rock. But the Music Lovers blend everything so seamlessly I was won over before the first chorus. Matthew Edwards' clever, heartfelt and melodic songs and soulful voice would sound great in any context, but they seem particularly appropriate to the light pop and bossa nova rhythms used here. This is what the Divine Comedy would sound like if they weren't so sneeringly smug. Fans of Scott Walker and Cousteau will love this.
