great gift idea,

Every year I would pick out a different page a day for my dad. He loves word jumbles, crosswords and such. This calendar he now requests every year. Some days he brings the pages home to share with others. A great gift for the intellectual.

The Word A Day Calendar is my favorite way to watch the days go by. The words are interesting, and the sentences using the words are always apt and enlightening. The explanations and stories about derivation on the back of each page present a treasure trove of information which leads your thoughts to further inquiries.

This book does indeed help in learning new words. It provides a lackadaisical, languid or nonchalant (albeit interesting) way to garner new tidbits for expressing a plethora of minutiae which abound in the thoughts of the boorish and churlish within the hoi polloi (the gallery) on this mortal coil. Although a classic "pearls before swine" it is a good yearly purchase for adding expressions to the vocabularies of those unfortunates who do not have the initiative to have already expanded their diminutive tautology and meaningless drivel as they saunter along the "Bell Curve." Enough said with my dubiously enlightened verbiage.

I really thought I was a wordsmith until I got this calendar. I haven't known any of the words since the beginning of the year but I'm having a ball learning. I also like that the word is used in a sentence to provide context. Also on the back of the page some history related to the word's use. A great calendar.

Indispensible,

A new word from this calendar greets me every single morning, and jump-starts my brain while I'm washing my face. Words often pop up that remind me of someone, and I sent that page to her or him; I sometimes recognize words I've encountered in various books and, happening to remember where one of those words appeared, I place that page in the book at the point where the word appeared... it's GREAT fun. This word-a-day calendar is the greatest innovation in calendar use since the designation of Leap Years.

A New Word Each Day,
This review is from: 365 New Words-A-Year Page-A-Day Calendar 2007 (Calendar)
I love the day calendar. I placed it by my phone in the kitchen, so am able to read the word for the day several times a day.
But the neatest thing this year is that I also purchased two extra ones. One for my sister and one for my daughter. We, three, are avid Scrabble players and when we play we use the new words we have learned. It's fun to see who can remember the most. Sincerely, Anne Kreider

Calendar Fun,
This review is from: 365 New Words-A-Year Page-A-Day Calendar 2007 (Calendar)
This was a gift for my vocabulary-loving 10 year old. She's been having so much fun learning new words with it and would never describe this calendar as trumpery.

Would prefer if the etymology was on the front of the page as most of the words I'm fairly familiar with, whereas I can't say the same for the etymology. Also it would leave more space on the back so it can be recycled for note paper.
