Justin Ringle has turned out to be a songwriter strongly influenced by the seasons. His Portland, Oregon-based band’s last record, the critically acclaimed House With No Home, was a winter album par excellence, from its chilly cover art to its frostbitten songs of loneliness and loss.

But from the first piano notes of the title track, plinking like spring rain on a windowpane, ... Read more in Amazon's Horse Feathers Store

Editorial Reviews

The music of Horse Feathers hints at a folk songwriting genius on par with the likes of Elliott Smith's Either/Or, or the honesty of Nick Drake's Pink Moon, all neatly arranged into a whole new puzzle. --DCM Magazine

Product Description

Words are Dead is the critically acclaimed debut album that started it all for Horse Feathers. Nominated for Americana Album of the Year by the PLUG Independent Music Awards, counted among NPR's Best of 2006, the record became an instant classic and bestseller for Lucky Madison. Paste Magazine described it as a ''quiet mix of twang and crumple that instantly bewitched.'' Pitchfork said it was ''a homely relic in sepia tones and rough grains.'' Recorded primarily as a the Portland, Oregon duo of Justin Ringle and Peter Broderick, the album paved the way for the coming indie chamber folkster movement furthered by likeminded artists such as Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent musicianship January 4, 2007
Format:Audio CD
Along with Alexi Murdoch's "Time Without Consequence", this Portland, OR duo's 2006 CD is my favorite of the year. Although the lyrics are somewhat obscure, the music is incredible! The band utilizes various instruments (check out the musical saw on the first track) to add a fresh breath of air to their familiar, Sam Beam-esque (Iron & Wine) vocals and songwriting style. The duo understands how to use musical dynamics effectively, producing a rich swelling of instrumentation at just the right time in each song. I highly recommend the CD to fans of the indie-folk genre. Incidentally, the CD liner contains the lyrics to each song, if you're interested in trying your hand at cryptography.

This band's music is exceptional. Not only is this band extremely talented at song-writing, their music has been pieced together w/ such precision that it flows very naturally from speakers to ears and is very easy to listen to and admire.

I think the previews above speak for themselves. Bought the album immediately. Haven't stopped listening since. I check back at least once a week hoping to find another album from these guys!

As the title states: AMAZING. Another Northwest gift to music lovers!
