Book Description

With job security diminishing by the day, and families struggling under the stress of modern-day living, it seems everyone’s dream is to work from home. Yet an actual job worked from home is no more secure than any other job, and it’s estimated that over 90% of work from home or home business advertisements are scams or linked to scams.

This book details obvious and less obvious steps people can take to protect themselves, and to ensure they make the best choice possible from the 4 different ways to make money from home, choosing an option which is viable, which fits in with their lifestyle, and which has the best chance of being lucrative.

1.0 out of 5 stars Barely More Than a Long Sales Letter for MLM September 11, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I downloaded it for free, but I still say let the "buyer" beware. Hey, nothing is more valuable than your time. This item is being offered for free, but the time you waste reading it will be precious minutes of your own life squandered -- unless you are interested in MLM, or network marketing.

I hate giving bad reviews even when deserved, and so it gives me no great pleasure to say that this is not so much a book that will help you with your desire to start a home-based business, but a thinly disguised, lengthy sales letter designed to direct you to the author's web site.

I'll toss one scrap of credit to the author: She provides a fairly good outline of how to vet a MLM company for its value, and gives some advice on what to avoid -- because as we all know, the vast majority of MLM "opportunities" are scams. The author claims her chosen network marketing vehicle is different-- again, let the buyer beware.

One of the most egregious aspects of this "book" is that the author offers scads of statistics concerning the nature of jobs, the work place, home business success, etc. -- yet not one of them are attributed to a source! It's all just "studies show that ..." and then nothing. No footnotes, no citations, no attribution -- making any of these stats not worth the tiny amount of electricity your Kindle is using to read them.

There are a lot of authors here in the Kindle store working hard to write and sell informative books that offer great information and entertainment, and so it's sad that "marketing types" are cluttering this media to garner recruits for their own network marketing schemes.

1.0 out of 5 stars Useless - Don't even bother September 11, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This gave absolutely no useful information at all, only outlined why working at home is better than traditional office jobs. I took away nothing I didn't already know.

1.0 out of 5 stars a waste of time. MLM sales pitch September 22, 2011
By winn
Format:Kindle Edition
this was free, thank goodness. im always interested in learning about home business so i was happy to download this freebie. read it from cover to cover. in each new page, each new chapter looking for the "smart" info promised. what a waste. this book is ahuge MLM sells pitch. and not a very good one at that. basically gives vague info that you could be sccessful. very vague. it does tel you a lot to watch out for. but that should all be common sense. its free. it takes 30 minutes to read. thank goodness it was free & i wll not recommed this to anyoneelse to read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth looking at, even thought it's free! October 7, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Big, fat waste of time. Pushing her own agenda for MLM, which I consider to be a scam. Don't even bother downloading. For the first time since owning my Kindle, I'm going to permanently delete something!! I feel like it'll leave germs on my Kindle if I let it stick around.

I downloaded this book because I thought it would present a balanced view of different ways to work from home - however it did not. As others have noted, it centered mostly on to make money in a network marketing company, and did not mention other legitimate companies you can work for from home that don't require any investment except for your time.

While I agree there are legitimate network marketing opportunities that are not multi-level marketing opportunities, it's been my experience that they require at least some monetary investment, not to mention time to start building a customer base before you start seeing a return on that investment. This might be okay if you've got another source of income, but they may not be a viable option for people who need a steady source of income or who do not have money to invest in a network marketing opportunity.

Another thing that Christine Sutherland doesn't mention is the fact that many expenses that you incur as an independent contractor, including expenses you incur working as a network marketer, can be written off on your taxes, at least in the US. This could be because she lives in Australia, and the laws may be different there. She also does not give any examples of network marketing companies that fit the criteria she mentions in her book.

In summary, this book might be worth a look if you're looking for a guide about how to get started as a network marketer, however if you're looking for information on different companies that you can work for that will provide you a steady income with no monetary investment, as well as information on some of the other things you need to consider before you start working from home, there are other books you can download.

This is a thinly veiled attempt to prep the reader for recruitment into the author’s part of a MLM business (multilevel marketing / pyramid scheme / possible scam) although she doesn’t disclose that intent. In the early chapters, the author profusely badmouths most forms of earning a living other than that of her own choosing, MLM; and she irresponsibly spouts alleged, unsupported “studies”, “research”, “facts”, and “statistics.” At the end of this book, the author offers several other books that “are free only to readers of this book and only on two conditions:

1. You need to request the book/s from her by writing to info@lifeworks-group.com.au and giving a brief history of your experience with business, and what you’re looking for in a home business. There is a limit of 3 books per person.
2. You need to accept that these books are copyrighted, and that they may not be copied or distributed without my express permission…”
Cit: Sutherland, Christine (2011-08-09). Work From Home - Choose Smart & Live the Dream (Kindle Locations 635-639). The Lifeworks Group Pty Ltd. Kindle Edition.

It’s not a stretch of the imagination to assume that the requested personal business information will be used to screen for prospective recruits. And it’s obvious to me that the author will tend to reject any prospects who order books addressing mental disorders, body image issues, and smoking cessation issues and that she will tend toward accepting those who order books representing positive, proactive subject matter. You can find clues to this throughout the content of this book.
