Book Description

September 20, 2011
The number of Christian women in today's professional workforce is increasing, and they are hungry for practical mentoring. They yearn to learn from someone who has climbed the ladder of success without sacrificing family or faith---something author Diane Paddison has done with excellence and grace. The stories Paddison shares about her corporate, personal, and spiritual life, as well as the lives of other women like her, are both inspiring and instructive, providing on-target advice and concrete examples of how to succeed without feeling overwhelmed or compromised. This is a working book for working women. Full of practical, proven guidance that is both professionally viable and biblically sound, each chapter includes sidebars featuring pertinent facts from current research, resources relevant to the chapter's topic, action-oriented 'to do' lists, and other interactive material. Chapters also include questions suitable for discussion, making it an excellent resource for use in small groups. Work, Love, Pray is a valuable resource for professional Christian women, but it's also a must read for the husbands, sisters, daughters, and friends who share their lives.

More About the Author

Diane Paddison, Harvard MBA, twice held roles as the only female member of the executive team at a Fortune 500 company. Now chief strategy officer at Cassidy Turley, she's also a wife and mother, and a devoted Christian. Paddison began working on the family farm, paid her way through college, served with IBM and earned a Harvard MBA. She rose to the executive committee of Trammell Crow Company and global executive teams of CBRE and ProLogis. In Work, Pray, Love - updated in 2012 - Paddison uses personal highs and lows to help today's women balance career and family. Diane Paddison founded 4word - 4wordwomen.org - linking women committed to faith, family, and work to each other. 4word's value - secular and spiritual - emerges not only in local chapters, but also through a virtual community. Paddison's strong "Yes" to faith, family and work stands out as a national dialogue grows around women in business, with Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, and Princeton professor Anne-Marie Slaughter also speaking out.

5.0 out of 5 stars What should we do to find balance? November 5, 2011
Format:Paperback
Dianne Paddison writes on how women can find the right balance in their lives between their jobs, families and their faith. She starts her career as a commercial real estate broker and after twenty-two years, she realizes she had arrived at the position of chief operating officer. She was not required to sacrifice time with her family because the company she worked for shard her same values. She left the company to go to another company which promised to fulfill her needs to spend time with her family. The new company felt the effects of the declining housing market in 2008. For the first time in her life, Dianne was asked to put her career before her family. The book is a guide for women who are placed in the same situation and it offers information in the tone of narrative chapters, reflection and discussion questions. The book also offers advice for women who would find themselves in similar situations. The questions at the end of each chapter allow the reader to focus on brainstorming problem solving solutions to the career and life problems mentioned within the chapter. Each chapter ends with a situational analysis or factual hypothetical scenario regarding an issue method with the chapter.

The book goes over every issue and obstacle which could stand in the way of a woman achieving balance in her career. These barriers include: family planning, keeping fit and making time for regular exercise, making time for each season in life, understanding the value of networking with other professional women, handling money matters and making a conscious effort to grow your faith. The author discusses the current inequalities in the workplace and how they affect women in general in the workforce.

The rules of life as discussed in the book include: finding your own faith journey, not living by a "one-cross rule" of Christianity, finding if your company guidelines and goals are compatible with your faith, being realistic with your finances, making time for Bible study and Church family, nurturing your spiritual, physical, emotional an professional self, and accepting the limitations of being human. The appendix includes a resource of professional organizations for women with websites and summaries of the company information. The book is a good resource for working women and can be used for beginning a career or studying even after having spent time at home raising a family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insights from an Excellent Mentor September 24, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
We know how valuable a mentor can be for career and life success. However, mentors who can share experience and insights to help balance three important life dimensions - faith, family and career - are extremely rare. As I read Work, Love, Pray, I was amazed at how skillfully Diane Paddison was able to draw from her own experiences as corporate executive, mother, wife and devoted Christian to provide valuable guidance for young women beginning their careers and the challenging balancing act that follows.

Like a great mentor, Paddison does not preach or direct. Rather, she shares her own triumphs and heartaches with humility and candor, and poses thought provoking questions for her "mentees" to consider and explore. She doesn't shy away from sensitive, yet important topics that are too often glossed over in other forums. Reading each chapter feels like a powerful mentoring session with someone who speaks from the heart and wants only the best for the reader.

This is a book I will recommend frequently and share with my college age daughter. Although targeted for young Christian women, I believe Work, Pray, Love would be valuable for any woman looking to balance her career and family goals and navigate the workplace with integrity and grace.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book deserves a broader audience.. September 19, 2011
By DHW
Format:Paperback
OK...I'd like to offer the first male review of this book!

I finished the book this weekend and frankly have a problem with it. It says, right there on the front cover, that the intended audience is Young Christian Professional Women.

Well, I beg to differ.

Simply put, I thought the book was fantastic. I'm a bibliophile and rarely say that about any book! I so agree with what the Prof from Michigan State says in the earlier review. The book is very inspirational, practical and honest. It is rare to find a book with all three.

However, the problem I have is that the audience described on the cover is far too narrow for such a great book!

I think that any husband of a current or former Christian businesswoman should read this book. I am one of those and it gave me extremely valuable insight into the mind of my wife.

Insight into the mind of my wife is, well, something that is priceless!

Also, if any one has a daughter that is a junior or senior in high school OR a daughter in college...they should have their daughter read this book. They will be inspired and given invaluable counsel on the journey they have yet to begin. Counsel that will both help steer them in the right direction and, more imporantly, steer them away from things that can lead them astray.

It is going into the hands of Maggie, my 17 year old, ASAP!
