3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
It is good for if you are on an elliptical and want some upbeat motivation for music. Not good if you are teaching a step class.

2.0 out of 5 stars If only the album were as good as the cover...., November 16, 2009

This appears to be a marketing project by Out magazine. Reflecting its provenance, this album illustrates the triumph of visuals over substance. The cover, of course, will attract plenty of attention from its intended audience. And it's remarkably successful at that. However, the disc itself is not the greatest. Probably any gayboy in the USA could compile just as good a playlist from his iPod, if not better.

Some of the songs here ("For The Love Of You", "Once In A Lifetime Love", and Toni Braxton's remake of "The Boss") are very good. Others ("Everybody Be Somebody", "The Bomb/These Sounds Fall Into My Mind") are just dregs. As other reviewers have remarked previously, this is a good disc to play at the gym while on the elliptical machine with one's brain on autopilot. It could have been so much better. I don't feel taken advantage of, though, because I only paid 99 cents for my copy. Had I paid full price, I would definitely have felt cheated. Two stars max, IMHO. If that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Step to this...good pace, February 27, 2006

I used to do a lot of step aerobics. Now in my 50's, my knees are kinda wonky, but my favorite heart workout is still free-form mixed-impact, dance-y step, performed for about an hour. This CD has been a good fall-back-to selection for years. I rediscover it and play the heck out of it for a month or two before I cycle it out, but I always go back to it. The pace slides up and down very slightly, which revs my adrenal jets a lot.

I do a lot of types of workouts, and my other favorite aerobic music includes rock like Limp Biskit, Midnight Oil and Big Country, Latin like Chucho Valdez and Tito Puentes, rap, reggaeton like Don Omar, and of course dance music like Johnny Vicious Ultra Dance 01. This CD is right there, though. Very blood-pumping.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sums up the hits, dance artists, and remixers of the era..., October 26, 2005
This review is from: Work Out: Over 60 Minutes of Mixed Dance Music (Audio CD)
Definitely a "greatest hits" collection of dance mixes from the day, this one is filled with club hits and cheesy commercial radio hits. The real tragedy here is that, several of these songs, which are near impossible to find on CD, are all very short on this disc. Track times:

1. professional widow (3:58)
2. america (I love America) (5:10)
3. For the love of you (tony moran mix) (4:58)
4. The bomb (4:35)
5. Heartbeat (e-smoove mix) (5:57)
6. Close to you (4:20)
7. The boss (5:57)
8. once in a lifetime (3:41)
9. Make my body rock (4:55)
10. never get enough (junior's deep factory mix) (4:42)
11. tonight is the night (with the ORIGINAL vocalist, not the re-recording) (5:20)
12. everybody be somebody (back in the days mix) (6:35)

2.0 out of 5 stars Eye Candy? Yes. Ear Candy? Maybe., June 28, 2000
This review is from: Work Out: Over 60 Minutes of Mixed Dance Music (Audio CD)
I saw this CD and it drew my eye just as they'd planned. There's a shirtless, good-looking man on the cover. It said OUT on it, so I figured it was to benefit the magazine and I figured that they'd have a pretty good mix. However as is usual with DJ mix CDs there are a few songs you're sure to have heard and then in the midst of it are the songs that you've probably never heard of and that some producer was desperate to get on the CD for exposure.

It's marketed as a "Workout" CD, and the liner notes do contain some information on exercises but you could get the same information in any issue of "Men's Health" magazine for much less, and the men are just as pretty. And to be honest I have Nine Inch Nails albums with a better and more consistent beat. In my opinion, it's a total marketing ploy aimed at gay men. Some songs are good, but the mixing is bad which tends to make the songs too short. This has gone to my CD shelf and is collecting dust.

4.0 out of 5 stars I like it, March 16, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Work Out: Over 60 Minutes of Mixed Dance Music (Audio CD)
I bought this cd soon after it came out and I walk to it. Although it gets a little old, I haven't found another workout cd that maintains the beat to keep up my pace. I agree...marketing-wise, it would probably appeal to a certain section of demographics, but I like to walk to it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some Great Tracks..., July 7, 2001

I understand the previous reviewer's concern about tracks he doesn't recognize, but that just means he didn't spend much time in clubs during this period (I did but I don't anymore!). I do agree that it's not too conducive to working out, but it's a great dance CD. The songs by Tori Amos, Full Intention, The Bucketheads, The Braxtons, Waterlillies and Ruffneck all placed high on the Billboard Dance Chart, most going to #1. The Fun Factory, Jimmy Somerville and Le Click tracks were all club staples then, too. If you love mid-'90's era dance music, you'll love this.

It's a great "hop on the elliptical trainer and check out" disc. Nicely paced and a good mix of music that was current when it came out. I still enjoy this on occaision, years later.
