I'm a bladesmith who uses professional slack belts in making knives all day, many of which cost $5,000 and more. The general process is to use a very high speed grinder with high coarseness to remove a lot of metal (eg a very old, very dull knife, or the stock removal stage on a new knife)-- eg. 2,000+ rpm, then "step down" to 1,500 for rough finishing and fast initial sharpening, and finally finish off on your slack belt at 250 to 600 rpm with very fine grit.

The WorkSharp 2000 is at 1,750 and is not adjustable with drive belts (NOT meaning sharpending belts, drive belts are a way to drop speed via pulleys, like a drill press). The manufacturer also says not to use an aftermarket speed converter on their products to slow them down as it voids the warranty. It also burns them out, I've done it!

The 3000 is at 580 rpm which is PERFECT for final sharpening of knives with the correct grit. The mult thousand dollar microscopic Glendo Accu Finish IIs we use for bright polishing and razor edges run at 300, but razor sharpness is best with fine grit at 550 rpm on a slack belt-- in other words the 3000 with this belt attachment is ideal for very sharp knives, and of course you can still use the wheels for other sharpending needs like woodworking tools etc.

Note that your average bench grinder is more like 3,600 rpm, way out of this range and dangerous for fine knife work unless you're an experienced pro, and even we have lots of scars.

Some reviews have dinged the little plastic guide. Of course we do all our work freehand, but you can preserve the guide by frequently recentering the belt as you work. For really professional results, use a magnifying glass to figure out your angle-- usually around 25 degrees for China made knives.

I was a little disappointed. If your knife blade is in need of a lot of reshaping, from poor sharpening attempts in the past, you are going to need a much courser sanding belt.
This will probably work well for "tune-ups" once you get the blade angle right and sharp. If that's not the case, plan on spending a long time on each knife. Another issue is that the design won't allow you to sharpen the right side of the blade as far back towards the handle as the left side.

My Worksharp 3000 is excellent. Five stars for that device. The belt sharpening attachment is not so good. The little plastic guide it relies on to select an edge angle is pretty bad. It seems like they were nearly finished with the design and the lead designer walked off the job.

The plastic guide is easily damaged by a slightly mis-aligned belt. You've got to remove the guide and realign the belt each time you change an abrasive. The guide itself will be gradually cut and ruined by whatever you've managed to sharpen.

At least they might simply make the guide from some type of metal. That wouldn't solve all the issues, but it would be a start.

This device attaches easily to the W3000. Pretty impressive engineering. I like the system with the different belts but I'm not sure it's much better than a good electric knife sharpener. It requires a bit of skill to hold the blade at the correct angle during sharpening - especially towards the tip. I also wonder if the plastic guide piece will wear out over time. It did a good job of sharpening some scissors too.

This is a must for people like me that like a sharp knife but can't do it very easily or fast. The belts are pretty expensive but you can buy them directly from worksharp instead of having to buy the three different grits when you only need 1.

This is a must-have attachment for the Worksharp 3000! The set up is quick and easy. The tracking knob centers the belt quickly. The belt rollers are heavy duty sealed bearings that stay cool during prolonged use. I sharpened a huge pile of kitchen knives, serrated kitchen knives, pocket knives, and scissors. Amazing difference. We had two old kitchen knives in the back of the drawer that my wife had owned since the 80's without ever sharpening. Now they are the sharpest knives in the drawer. I tested the sharpness on a piece of paper just like the video and the knives sliced through the paper like a utility knife.

I only have two criticisms:

1. The knife and scissor guide is soft plastic that got a bit chewed up and jagged after use
2. The coarse and medium grit belts are identical and I couldn't tell the difference (even the inner markings). The user's guide says they are different but they should be marked with grit size as clearly as the disks are on the main sharpener.

The local sharpening service wanted $6 each to sharpen my kitchen knives, I have 4 knives that are sharper now using the worksharp3000 system than ever before. The first time I used it I did 4 knives in less than 1/2 hour. I've already paid for a third of the cost and I didn't need to waste time going back and forth to the mall. I did a odd shaped knife used for fishing, it was a little hard, but got it done. My wifes happy, need I say more.

I have had this machine a little over three years. It is a pretty good machine. I don't sharpen chisels from the bottom anymore though. I quickly found that method did not use up all of the sandpaper on the disk. So I bought the wide blade attachment for the table it contains. You can Google Stumpy Nubs for an alternate do it yourself way. With the table I use a honing guide to hold the chisels or plane blades. I restored a bunch of old chisels and plane blades with this machine. Once the blades are sharp the coarse sandpaper is not needed as much. When the two finer sandpapers wore out, I just put compound on the sandpaper. I use a black compound to re-sharpen and a white compound to polish. I got the compound idea from Stumpy Nubs. This method makes it fast and easy to maintain a sharp edge. I worked this machine really hard the first year. Occasionally it will need a little encouragement to start rotating. And sometimes it squeaks. Maybe I should clean it and give it a squirt or two of some dry lube. But it keeps working well enough to where I don't make time to do that.
