The most comprehensive book on the subject,
By Melanie Votaw (Brooklyn, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Work We Were Born To Do: Find the Work You Love Love the Work You do (Paperback)
As the instructor of a course related to this subject, I read everything out there on finding your "true vocation." I have found Nick Williams' approach to be the most comprehensive and heart-centered of all that are currently published. Nick approaches finding the work you were born to do as a task not separated from the rest of life, but rightly so, a question of "living" rather than "working." As his many practical exercises convey, our culture needs to change the way we think about work; the way we've confronted this problem in the past has not brought about joyful results. Nick's suggestions for self-discovery allow for the possibility of work being a joy rather than a job. If you choose one book on this subject, I would definitely go for this one.

If you suspect that you haven't yet found your right livelihood, don't read this book...use it as a workbook. Nick Williams covers all the insidious barriers to making our work the joyful experience it was meant to be. I plan to recommend this book heartily to participants in my workshops, newsletter subscribers and strangers on airplanes. And while it may be best read slowly, every chapter will open new insights. Even though I believe I am doing my right livelihood, I am finding a new level of enthusiasm and confidence thanks to Nick Williams' guidance.

The answer to the work dilemma,
By
This review is from: The Work We Were Born To Do: Find the Work You Love Love the Work You do (Paperback)
I've been looking at many books that address job satisfaction. This book hit the nail on the head -- but not the way I expected. Surprisingly, it's not the job that's the cause for crisis, but how you're letting your mind approach work. Not to say that Williams doesn't think that you can't find work that is more fulfilling to you. But he does suggest that you begin by discovering the small joys in your current work -- and they are there. One reviewer said this was a great mid-life crisis book, which profiles me, but I wish that I had read this book 20 years ago when I began my career.

You have to wade through this monstrosity of a book to get to the gems. I found myself skipping paragraphs through mumble jumble before I could get to the meat of the book. There are other books out there that will give you food for thought without a lot of new age catch phrases and self important pondering. Greg Levoy's Callings or Barbara Winter's Making a LIving Without a Job are more concise and informative choices. You don't want to spend your time reading--you want to spend your time doing!

There are many books out there on Finding work that you love. If you really want to discover what you want to do and start an action plan to acheive your dreams, I would instead recommend Making a Living Without a Job by Barbara Winter or anything by Barbara Sher. Nick's book will keep you busy reading, not achieving.
