Bobby Timmons' "Workin' Out" is another 2 LPs on 1 CD Prestige title that is sadly going out-of-print. The pianist is best known for his contributions to soul jazz, which are on display on the first session -- the original LP of "Workin' Out" recorded on October 21, 1964 and featuring Johnny Lytle on vibes, Keter Betts on bass and William "Peppy" Hinnant on drums. It is a solid date much in line with his earlier efforts from the decade for Prestige and Riverside, but nothing to get overly excited about. What is exciting however is the second session, originally issued as "The Soul Man!" and recorded on January 20, 1966. Despite its title, this set is classic modern jazz in the Blue Note style, thanks largely to its sidemen -- Ron Carter on bass, Jimmy Cobb on drums, and in a rare guest appearance at this stage in his career (other than with Miles), Wayne Shorter on tenor sax! The reason for Shorter's cameo, he and Timmons were bandmates in the Night in Tunisia-era Jazz Messengers -- come to think of it, a Wayne guest spot the following year was for another JM-alum, Lee Morgan on the Procrastinator. In any event, this second album alone is well worth the collector's prices you will most likely have to pay for this CD. "Workin' Out" is definitely good for you!
