Buy the Sundazed Reissues Instead,
By
This review is from: Working in a Coalmine (Audio CD)
Collectables, especially earlier in the cd era when this compilation was issued, is known for re-issuing great music and sub-par packaging and sound. This is a compilation of Lee Dorsey's Sansu/Amy label recordings (covering the 1965-70 period) from 1990. In 2001 Sundazed issued Dorsey's two Amy albums, each with original cover art, copious bonus material including numerous rare singles, and excellent annotation by Bill Dahl. The remastering is superb, rendering this item pointless. Spend the extra money and buy the superb "Ride Your Pony" and "The New Lee Dorsey" - you wont be disappointed.

WORKING IN A COAL MINE !,

This review is from: Working in a Coalmine (Audio CD)
I've been hummin' this song for years. Never forget the late great Lee Dorsey, along with his follow up hit, "Ride The Pony". He's surely in "soul heaven" with his other fellow late greats : Curtis Mayfield, Jr. Walker, Marvin Gaye, Rick James, Edwin Starr, Marv Johnson, O.C.Smith, Jackie Wilson, Johnny Bristol, Johnnie Taylor, Rufus Thomas, Lou Rawls, Arthur Conley, Hank Ballard, Barry White, Wilson Pickett, Luther Vandross, Billy Preston, McFadden & Whitehead !!

Lee Dorsey never reminded me of anybody but Ernie K-Doe ("Mother in Law") and they both worked with multi-talented music producer Allen Toussaint. I know all of Lee Dorsey's songs and this is representative of his best work. If you don't know his songs but were around when they were played on the radio, you'll recognize a lot more than one or two of them when you play this. I recommend it.

SOME GREAT R&B HERE!,

All of Lee Dorseys big hits are here (Workin in a Coal Mine, Ya Ya, Ride Your Pony, etc.) plus plenty of others I dont remember from years ago but which make for fine, finger snappin' today. I especially liked discovering Holy Cow, Hoodlum Joe and Get Out of my Life, Woman.Plenty to choose from here: 25 tracks on one CD. If you enjoy singers like Ray Charles, Joe Cocker or Lloyd Price you'll probably like Lee Dorseys songs and styling from the 70's. |
